Midge Raymond
Bill snores softly, and I ease myself out of bed. The kids’ doors
are closed, and I hear the normal, comforting sounds of Cate on the
phone in her room, of Justin’s music playing softly in his. Downstairs,
I wander through the kitchen and into the dining room. The table
has been completely cleared, with only the setting remaining in the
middle. Remembering Julie’s story, I light one of the candles. I sit at
the table, watching the candle burn down, and let the shadows play
tricks with my eyes.
