14 Wey & Arun Canal, Loxwood<br />
Towpath along a restored canal, pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />
through farmland and woodland host<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
wealth of wetland wildlife<br />
This restored section of <strong>the</strong> Wey &<br />
Arun Canal runs through woodland and<br />
farmland parallel to <strong>the</strong> Loxwood Stream<br />
river course (just to <strong>the</strong> south), which<br />
passes unh<strong>in</strong>dered beneath <strong>the</strong> canal<br />
at <strong>the</strong> Drungewick Aqueduct. The wet<br />
woodlands of Alder and Willow along <strong>the</strong><br />
canal are brimm<strong>in</strong>g with Bluebells and<br />
Wood Anemone flowers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g. This<br />
wetland corridor provides a rich variety<br />
of habitats for wildlife, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g many<br />
species of birds such as Herons, Greatcrested<br />
Grebes, Moorhens, Swans and<br />
Mallard ducks, as well as different bats,<br />
such as <strong>the</strong> Natterer’s Bat and Soprano<br />
Pipistrelle, and Grass Snakes. Dragonflies<br />
and damselflies are abundant among<br />
<strong>the</strong> rich aquatic vegetation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
beautiful da<strong>in</strong>ty Banded Demoiselle.<br />
i Wey & Arun Canal - this ‘Loxwood L<strong>in</strong>k’<br />
section of <strong>the</strong> canal has been lov<strong>in</strong>gly<br />
restored by Wey & Arun Canal Trust<br />
(WACT) volunteers and contractors,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> construction of Loxwood<br />
tunnel and lock (completed <strong>in</strong> 2009) and<br />
restoration of Brewhurst Lock (1994-97),<br />
Baldw<strong>in</strong>’s Knob Lock (1991-93) and <strong>the</strong><br />
impressive Drungewick Aqueduct (2002-3).<br />
WACT has been work<strong>in</strong>g to restore <strong>the</strong><br />
23-mile waterway for public use s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong><br />
1970s, and provides <strong>in</strong>formation leaflets<br />
at <strong>the</strong> car park and each lock, as well as<br />
publish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Wey-South Path guide.<br />
Wey-South Path - mostly follows <strong>the</strong><br />
orig<strong>in</strong>al tow path of <strong>the</strong> disused Wey &<br />
Arun Canal – “London’s Lost Route to <strong>the</strong><br />
Sea” – which opened <strong>in</strong> 1816 to establish<br />
a waterbourne trad<strong>in</strong>g route that connected<br />
<strong>the</strong> River Arun near Pulborough with <strong>the</strong><br />
River Wey near Guildford for 50 years.<br />

Very gentle and easy walk along <strong>the</strong> flat canal<br />
towpath; <strong>the</strong> suggested return leg to <strong>the</strong> north<br />
through fields and woods crosses rougher ground.<br />

Aquaduct<br />
Walk route: Head east along <strong>the</strong> canal towpath (<strong>the</strong><br />
‘Loxwood L<strong>in</strong>k’, form<strong>in</strong>g part of <strong>the</strong> Wey-South Path)<br />
for about 2½ kms, pass<strong>in</strong>g Brewhurst Lock and<br />
Bridge, Baldw<strong>in</strong>’s Knob Lock and Barnsill Bridge<br />
until you cross over Drungewick Aquaduct to reach<br />
Drungewick Lane canal bridge. You can ei<strong>the</strong>r head<br />
back <strong>the</strong> way you have just come from here, or for a<br />
longer more varied route cross over <strong>the</strong> bridge and<br />
walk up <strong>the</strong> road to take <strong>the</strong> footpath westwards from<br />
Drungewick Hill Farm down to woodland. Cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
west to emerge from <strong>the</strong> wood to cross fields as<br />
far as Brewhurst Lane bridge, which you cross and<br />
return along <strong>the</strong> canal path to <strong>the</strong> car park.<br />
