From The Editor
Dear Friends,
March! One step closer to spring. We’ve had a great winter here on the mountaintop...
lots of fresh powder for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Wisp Ski Resort had one of its
best seasons ever and the staff and management there look forward to a bright future
with their new owners. Read all about it starting on Page 6.
For me, the advent of Spring brings a sense of renewal and new beginnings. If you’re
looking for a new direction, Garrett College will be hosting two events this month that
you may want to check out. The first is Second Chances for Women, sponsored by
the Garrett Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). It is
an event for women thinking about going back to or starting college. I was fortunate
enough to be on the panel last year and meet some of the brave young women returning
to complete their education...very inspiring. Read more about it on Page 50.
They’ve also instituted the Garrett Institute of Lifelong Learning (GILL) for senior citizens
who wish to remain active and involved. Their story is on Page 34. And of course,
the Annual Garrett County Job Fair will be held on March 28th for those looking for
part time, full time or summer work. Complete information on this and other March
Happenings can be found in our Calendar of Events starting on Page 26.
So get out and enjoy the warm weather, appreciate the sun, and remember, whatever
your pleasure this March...enjoy!
Wisp Resort Better than Ever!
New Ownership & Existing Management
provide Stability and Consistency
After fourteen months in Chapter 11, Wisp Resort emerged from bankruptcy
protection in late December with a new ownership structure and an infusion of
capital and experience. Salt Lake City, Utah based Everbright Pacific, an affiliate
of Pacific Group, has taken over as the new operator of the resort. Pacific Group
partnered with a publicly traded real
estate investor on the transaction.
The sale was finalized just in time
for the Christmas holidays to arrive
and for the ski season to kick off in
earnest.
The vast majority of the Wisp
management team will remain
in their current positions with
longtime Wisp Resort veteran
Jerry Geisler assuming the reins
of General Manager. This smooth
transition will provide successful
and experienced management for
the resort going forward. Pacific Group will bring its operations and development
experience from ski and golf resorts in New England, Canada, and throughout the
West to help Wisp Resort as it expands its on-mountain services and associated
amenities.
“To be able to emerge from bankruptcy with a healthy financial situation presents
lots of opportunities for us,” explained Geisler. “The way our team has worked
together through a very difficult economic situation has been a strong testament
to the culture here. With the additional support from Pacific Group, we are back
on track towards our goal of providing our guests with the best mountain resort
experience in the Mid-Atlantic region.”
Geisler noted that the resort is in the midst of working on plans for improving
the resort beginning this summer. In the meantime, some first steps towards
improvements have already been implemented such as providing ski and snowboard
rentals at the top of the mountain on busy weekends in the building that houses
the Pumphouse Café. Food service has also been expanded at that location. Both
changes have helped relieve some congestion in the Main Lodge on busy holidays
and weekends. Geisler noted, “By eliminating the shuttle ride back down the
mountain to the base for rentals and lift tickets, our guests get more time on the
snow and have a much better experience.”
Wisp Resort is continuing its full offerings in skiing and snowboarding as well
as snow tubing, ice skating, the mountain coaster, cross-country skiing and other
winter activities. In fact, crowds for certain weekends this winter broke previous
sales records. Far from narrowing the focus to just winter, summer and other fourseason
activities such as golf, Segway tours, fly-fishing, mountain biking, canopy
tours, and the mountain coaster will
be augmented and improved as well.
Wisp’s mountain operations
have always been healthy, but
when the real estate market turned
down, real estate development
activities associated with the
property adversely affected the
whole company. Geisler explained
that as part of the process of settling
the bankruptcy, an unrelated entity
has purchased a large portion of
the real estate development land
around Lodestone Golf Club, although the course itself will continue to be owned
and operated by Wisp Resort. That unrelated real estate entity has plans to rekindle
the real estate sales this spring. Geisler commented, “They will be focusing on the
real estate around the upper golf course, and our guys will be focusing on the ski and
summer recreation related aspects of the mountain. Our job is to provide the very
est on-mountain experience we can, and we’re looking forward to it.”
Skip Around Town
12 -The Lake-Front TM - March, 2013
...by Skip “Hummingbird” Carr
I’m writing this early this month
due to scheduling issues, so if the ink
seems more faded than ink on some
of the other pages, you know why.
Happy March birthdays to Amy
Hook(22) and Camden Ritchie(2).
I saw Caleigh Raine Calhoun of
Friendsville last month for the first
time in years...a lovely and intelligent
young lady...daughter of Carol and
Crede Calhoun.
If you are looking for a full or parttime
job, or if you are looking for employees
for your business, the Annual
Garrett County Job Fair will be held
on Thursday, March 28th from 3pm to
6pm in the new gymnasium at Garrett
College.
Speaking of jobs, I was trying to impress
Local Legend Lou Battistella
with my advanced bagging skills...
you know tossing jars in the air and
catching them behind my back and
ricochetting off the wall and into the
waiting bag without moving my head
or my feet, then tying the bag with one
hand...didn’t work. Lou looked and he
I got to chat with Greta Taylor of
DQ Grill & Chill last month...always
a pleasure.
Sincere condolences to Larry and
Lana Roby who lost Lana’s mother
last month.
Spring training began last month
and the first MLB regular season game
will be on March 31st. Art Capobianco
of Deep Creek Gourmet is excited
about the Boston Red Sox, however, I
can assure you that the only way there
will be World Series games played in
Boston this year is if everything west
of Worcester and south of Braintree
slides off the continent into the Pacific
Ocean and...well, never mind.
Don’t forget Locals’ Night at Santa
Fe Grille- Wednesday and Thursday
gets you a big discount if you live within
50 miles of the restaurant...great food,
professional service and wallet-friendly
prices.
I saw Pam Scott of Second
Homes At The Lake recently...looking
as young and vibrant as ever.
I called a bunch of my friends and
waited from noon to well after 11pm
and nothing happened...no explosion,
no splat, nothing...so much for that old
Dear Chef Larry,
You and your Assistant Chef, Sarah, provided
a perfect evening for my family’s visit. The meal
and service was wonderful, and I appreciate all the
special care you took to include the vegetarians in
your planning.
What I will never forget, though, was our lastminute
emergency when we suddenly remembered
another guest’s dietary restrictions. You and Sarah
immediately created a special menu for my guests
from the foods you had on hand, and she never
knew we hadn’t planned it from the beginning!
Thank you for a very special time with my family.
Senior College Gets New Name
Plans underway for new Spring Classes
Garrett Institute of Lifelong Learning (GILL) is the name selected for the senior
college initiative being launched at Garrett College through the division of Continuing
Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). In addition to the name,
which was voted in unanimously by those present at a recent planning meeting,
organizational positions were filled. GILL officers will be as follows: Chair, Kitty
Lauer; Vice Chair, Barb McClosky; Secretary, Judi Schiff; and Treasurer, Robert
McClosky
The concept for GILL was developed over the last several months by a group
of local residents interested in providing educational opportunities which will be
selected by the members for the members. “What is key here is that the Institute
members own this,” Lauer emphasized.
Also fundamental to GILL is the development of programs of study rather than
individuals classes. The purpose is to provide deeper and broader consideration
of a subject by studying it from various angles. Members who were present at the
meeting voted for the following topics to be offered this May: Current alternative
energy sources; Spring flowers; History of Garrett County; and Health, to include
nutrition, cooking, and exercise. For each class scheduled, a GILL member is the
volunteer coordinator who will find an appropriate instructor.
“The time frame for each class in May is six hours spread over four 90 minute
class session. This is the model that GILL will follow, but other arrangements are
feasible,” explained Sue Fowler, the CEWD program director who is working with
this group.
An additional “Lunch and Learn” class, featuring DVD’s on the brain and its
functions will also be offered to members at no charge. There will be a one-time
minimal introductory membership fee for the first group of classes to be offered
this May,” Fowler said.
Other ideas for possible classes, for now and in the future, were also noted.
They include genetic modified organisms, managing finances, wine and food pairings,
American Constitution, Gettysburg, tax preparation, robotics, problem solving,
local authors, languages, local crafts/artisans, sailing and water sports, cultural
geography, and local small businesses.
In addition to developing a curriculum, the GILL group plans to create a web
site to disseminate information on classes and activities. “Our meetings will be
held on the last Monday of the month at 1 p.m. Any one who is interested in becoming
involved with the GILL planning process is welcome,” Fowler said.
For further information, persons may contact Fowler at susan.folwer@garrettcollege.edu
Artistically Speaking
Spruce Forest Artisan Village is
Expanding Programs & Events in 2013!
Come visit a place where creativity thrives! Spruce Forest Artisan Village
offers a rare opportunity to explore contemporary art studios, watch the
resident artists work, and learn about their creative process.
Located on the Historic National Road at Penn Alps in Grantsville, MD,
Spruce Forest Artisan Village is an arts and heritage center. It was conceived
in the 1950s by Dr. Alta Schrock as a venue for preserving and promoting
the traditional crafts of the Allegheny region. Today, Spruce Forest is home
to historic cabins that have been moved from surrounding homesteads and
restored to create studios, galleries and museums. These rustic buildings
house an amazing array of artists
and their expressions, including
jewelry, pottery, weaving,
bird carving, metal sculptures,
hand-made soaps and candles,
woodturning, and more.
Lynn Lais, Spruce Forest’s
resident potter said, “Where else
can you go to visit a group of
contemporary artists, observe their
real working studios in action, and
spend all day asking questions
about their techniques… for free?”
One of the original log cabins you’ll
find at Spruce Forest Artisan Village
42 -The Lake-Front TM - March, 2013
Submitted by the Garrett County Arts Council
While the experience is free, the
artists’ one-of-a-kind creations are
available for purchase.
Each month during the summer and fall, the Artisan Village provides
rotating studio-gallery space for three non-resident artists. In 2013, they will
showcase glass, paper quilling, painting, colored pencil drawing, basketmaking,
quilting, and photography.
Spruce Forest keeps contemporary and traditional craft traditions alive
by offering classes and workshops. That is how Gary Yoder, resident master
a carving class from Dr. Miller. “I still remember that the class description
Adult workshops for 2013 will include glaze decoration (April 20),
The Deep Creek Art and Wine Festival Committee is pleased
to announce that HART for Animals and Garrett Lakes Arts Festival
forward. The Festival Committee was very pleased to have many
strong responses to the “Request for Participation” by deserving nonprofits.
“It was a difficult choice, but after much discussion, the Committee
voted that HART and GLAF, working in collaboration, will assume
the leadership role for the Festival”, per Vianne Bell, co-chair of
event.
The Festival requires over one hundred volunteers, multiple
committee Chair persons and a large of amount of time in order to
successfully run this event on an annual basis. HART and GLAF shared
their views on how to lead and improve the Festival over the years.
The Committee voted that their responses best fit the needs of the Festival
and will lead to its continued success.
“The Deep Creek Lake Art & Wine Festival is one of the most
popular events in Garrett County,” says Paula Yudelevit, Executive
Director of HART for Animals. “HART is honored to be chosen, along
with GLAF, as the beneficiary of this highly successful and organized
festival. We truly appreciate the value and impact the Art & Wine
Festival will have on our fundraising objectives and are committed to
sustaining the event for many years to come.”
“The Board of Directors of Garrett Lakes Arts Festival is thrilled
to partner with HART for Animals to work together to ensure the continued
success of the Art and Wine Festival.” states Mary Callis, the
Executive Director of GLAF. “This festival has been very popular and
a vital part of our tourism industry as well as adding to our county
charm. I am so pleased that we are able to work together to keep this
wonderful event in Garrett County.”
Lean is implemented as a business-wide
philosophy and not simply as a cost-cutting
initiative, according to the Lean Enterprise Institute. Fuchs will define the concepts
of “Lean” and outline ways in which it can be implemented in any organization.
Mike Tumbarello, Coordinator of the Garrett Entrepreneurship and co-facilitator
of the conference, noted that lean concepts apply to all industries and all types
and sizes of organization, including governmental and non-profit. “The application
of lean principles can help any organization compete in a dynamic, challenging
global marketplace and lean principles can also help enhance the customer
experience as well as contain costs,” he said.
The 2013 Western Maryland Lean Conference, which will provide a choice of
workshops, was designed to be benefitical for beginners and experts alike. Topics
will include key aspects of continuous improvement, and steps for developing a
lean transformation plan.
What’s Happening
Second Chances for Women
Slated for Saturday, March 23
Second Chances for Women, a discussion group and workshop for
women who are considering returning to college, will be held on Saturday,
March 23 from 9 AM to 1 PM at Garrett College.
The event, which will be held in Room 511 off the Library, will
include panels, roundtables, discussion and support from women who
have returned to school and succeeded, Garrett College staff and faculty,
and others.
The event is sponsored by the Garrett Branch of the American
Association for University Women (AAUW) in conjunction with Garrett
College and seeks to help make that first step back to school a little
easier and more friendly. According to Garrett AAUW President Marilyn
Moors, women who need to find financial security for themselves and
their children are faced with few choices in today’s job market. “Time
and again, economic studies have shown that the primary way for women
to increase their earnings is to increase and upgrade their educations,”
explains Marilyn. “Return to school, however, is a major step for women
to take, particularly those women who were mediocre students in high
school, or women who are busy at home or holding down jobs. ”
The morning workshop introduces women thinking about returning
to school to other women who have chosen that path. “We share stories
of our fears, particularly of our fear of failure, and our hopes for what can
be accomplished if we work hard at it. They will hear from some of the
faculty about why they are better prepared to do academic work than they
think they are. The program lets these women meet some of the Garrett
College staff, get preliminary information about college schedules and
financing, career counseling, and support systems. Attendees will also be
given a tour of Garrett College and its facilities. Most importantly,” says
Marilyn, “it reminds them that there are other women in the community
to cheer them on and encourage them in their educational endeavors and
progress.”
The Garrett Branch of AAUW offers a $500 scholarship to one of the
women attending, selected by lot, and information on other scholarships
available to them. Babysitting and lunch are provided.
For more information on Second Chances or to register, call Marilyn
Moors at 301-746-4057 or email her at mmoors@pennswoods.net.
