Antimicrobial Ventricular Shunt Catheter
Antimicrobial Peritoneal Shunt Catheter Indication
Silverline Shunt Catheters are
indicated to be used in all patients
with an indication for internal CSFdrainage.
The trocar is used for
tunneling the catheter.
The catheter has
numbered depth marks.
The peritoneal catheter
is made of two layers.
The antiseptic
radiopaque inner layer
prevents colonization
under the influence of
CSF in an optimal way.
The outer layer is made
of pure silicone. The
antiseptic effect is
achieved by diffusion of
silver ions from the inner
layer. The pure silicone
prevents micro fractures
and calcification.
Product Description
Silverline Ventricular Shunt Catheters
are made of antiseptic radiopaque
implant grade silicone. They have
numbered centimeter marks. A stylet
Product Description
The catheters are made of radiopaque
polyurethane. Their round tip
is closed. They have numbered
centimeter marks. Stylet, trocar,
Luer-Lock connector, and suturing
wing are delivered with the catheter.
The catheter is outfitted
with lettered marks.
The trocar is used for
tunneling.
The Luer-Lock
connector for the
connection with the
EVD-Kit is attached to
the catheter.
The slitted suturing wing
is used for fixation to the
skin.
CSF is released through
the hollow stylet when
the ventricle is
punctured.
The Luer-Lock connector
is connected to the
external ventricular
drainage kit.
The stylet is used for
stiffening during
insertion.

External Ventricular Drainage
Catheter with Cranial Bolt
The ventricular catheter is fixed in
the bone by means of a bolt. After
making a burr hole and opening the
dura the probe is placed in the
ventricle with the bolt in place in the
upper region of the catheter.
The catheter has two
sets of numbered depth
marks. The first set is
related to the tip of the
Scientific Information about Silverline ® Technology
Can we eliminate CSF-drainage infection?
Infections are a serious complication of CSFdrainage
systems. Even with best surgical
technique and utmost aseptic handling measures
infections cannot be avoided completely (1, 2,
4).
Impregnating ventricular catheters with a
combination of Rifampicin and Minocyclin, or
Rifampicin and Clindamycin reduces the
likelihood of catheters to become colonized and
reduces the frequency of positive CSF cultures
(6). However, prophylactic use of antibiotics
carries the risk of infection with antibiotic
resistant organisms including opportunistic
infection due to organisms such as candida (8).
Silver as an antimicrobial substance has been
known for centuries (3). It has been used in
central venous catheters for some time (Erlangen
Silver Catheter).
Method
Particles of silver and particles of an an insoluble
silver salt are incorporated in the polyurethane
or silicone material of Silverline Catheters.
Silver ions have a strong antiseptic effect with a
broad spectrum (3, 5). Should a resistancy to
silver develop under the influence of the the
silver ions, the antibiotic therapy will still be
possible.
The particles have a large specific surface
resulting in the release of silver ions in antiseptic
concentration on the surface of the catheter.
There are two phases to the release of the
antiseptic agent: In phase one the silver salt
releases silver ions in antiseptic concentration.
Phase one starts immediately after placement of
the catheter and lasts for several hours. In phase
two silver ions are released from the metallic
silver. Phase two begins some hours aftert
catheter placement and it lasts for a very long
time.
Silver inactivates the enzyme systems with SHgroups
of the cell wall that are active in the
transmembraneous energy metabolism. Silver
ions block the breathing chain of the bacteria
(5).
Results
Using the roll-culture method Silverline
catheters were subjected to different suspensions
of bacteria for various fixed time intervals. After
that, roll-cultures were done. For control
purposes non-antimicrobial catheters were
subjected to the same test (7).
Silverline catheters demonstrated antimicrobial
effects on:
- Staph. aureus,
- Staph. epidermidis,
- Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus,
- E. coli,
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
- Clostridium difficile,
- Acinetobacter baumannii,
- Streptococcus intermedius,
- Candida albicans, and
- Candida glabrata.
The figure shows cultures of the Silverline
catheter and of a non-antimicrobial control made
of the same material after subjecting them to a
suspension of Staph. aureus. The top row shows
cultures of the Silverline catheter after 16 hours
and 32 hours. The lower row is the control.
Continuing growth can be seen clearly on the
cultures of the control catheters. The cultures of
Silverline catheters show markedly reduced
growth after 16 hours and sterility after 32
hours.
In clinical studies a marked reduction of the
infection rate was found (9, 10, 11).
Discussion
The antimicrobial effect of Silverline Catheters
could be shown clearly in the in-vitro trial. The
broad spectrum of efficacy and the two phases of
release of the antiseptic agent make the product
efficient and long lasting.
Because of its broad band effect with no danger
of resistancies the Silverline catheters are a new
approach for preventing EVD and shunt
infection.
