Note that in steering a hydrophone array to be sensitive to a particular angle, nothing about the<br />

array itself is changed— only the interpretation <strong>of</strong> the data it records is altered. By changing the<br />

data processing, the same array can be steered to observe any <strong>of</strong> a large range <strong>of</strong> angles. In fact,<br />

using the same recorded data from the elements <strong>of</strong> the hydrophone array, different data<br />

processing can be used to examine the sounds coming from different angles simultaneously. In<br />

this way, a hydrophone array can be used to examine the echoes from a single ping at many<br />

different locations.<br />
