opposite sides only of the branehes. Many of the leaves are brought into this
position by a twisting of their bases (fig. 41). Leaves of the lower crown are
from 14 to about 2f inches long. Leaves of the uppermost branches are often
notched, also, but are usually all more or less (crowded together, pointing upward,
on the top of the sprays, while the scattered leaves of the leader are

inch or 11 inches long. All leaves are conspicuously white oii their under surfaces.
Mature luds are covered with resin, and the twigs of the season are
pale russet brown and minutely hairy. The cones mnature in early fall, and with
their clear, light yellow-green color and slender, cylindrical form are very
characteristic (fig. 42). They are about 2' to 41 inches long and about 1 to
