<strong>ANTIBIOTIC</strong> USE<br />

• Oral prophylactic regimen to decrease<br />

bacterial colonization for elective colo-rectal<br />

surgery.<br />

– Mechanical bowel preparation<br />

- Use of Go-Lytely<br />

– Oral antibiotics<br />

- Erythromycin base and neomycin 1gm PO @ 1pm,<br />

2pm and 11pm (for an 8 am surgery or 19, 18 and 9<br />

hours preop<br />

– This regimen in addition to IV antibiotics (cefoxitin<br />

or cefotetan) further reduces risk of post-operative<br />

infection
