ANTIBIOTIC SELECTION
• Vancomycin
– Utilized as prophylaxis in institutions in which
methicillin resistant S. aureus and S.
epidermidis are a frequent cause of
postoperative wound infection
– Utilized in patients with documented allergies
to Penicillins and cephalosporins
– Increased empiric use likely contributes to the
development of vancomycin resistant
enterococcus (VRE)
