Primary Pupils Publish Book on the Achievements of
Britains Black Olympic Heroes
With only weeks to go now until the
Olympics get under way, primary
school pupils in Manchester have
helped write a unique new book
celebrating the achievements of
Britain’s Black Olympic heroes.
Pupils from fifteen schools in the city
have worked with the Ahmed Iqbal
Ullah Education Trust in Manchester
to research and write the book that
features 24 black British Olympians.
The content of the book has been
produced by the pupils themselves
and includes biographies of each
of the athletes, artwork, poetry and
fan letters about the sportsmen and
women from minority groups who
have represented Great Britain on
the Olympic stage.
These include some of the most
famous Black British Olympians
such as Daley Thompson and
Tessa Sanderson, young up-andcoming
heroes like Louis Smith, and
Paralympians such as Ade Adepitan
and Alexandra Rickham, as well
as local former Olympians, Darren
Campbell and Diane Modahl.
The book shows how Britain’s young
people are inspired by our nation’s
Black Olympic heritage, and is
intended for use by primary school
teachers as a teaching resource to
share with their classes in the run up
to this summer’s Olympics.
The pupils involved in writing and
researching the book were invited to
the Town Hall to celebrate its launch
with the Lord Mayor of Manchester,
and also to meet up with one of their
Olympic heroes who features in the
book, Diane Modhal.
Pupils handed over a copy of the
book to Diane Modhal who was
impressed by all the hard work that
had gone into it and told how she
first got into running at the age of 11
after being spotted by a local coach
during a school PE lesson and then
training twice a week for the next
seven years with her running club
Sale Harriers.
She told pupils: “Don’t let anyone
tell you that you can’t achieve your
dreams. Whether you want to be an
athlete, a doctor, or anything else,
hard work, confidence, commitment,
dedication and never giving up -
whatever you want to do in life, this
is what it takes to make your dreams
come true.”
The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Elaine
Boyes, handed out certificates to all
the pupils from Abbot Community
Primary School, Acacias Primary
School, Birchfields Primary School,
Debate Mate Plant Sale
Twelve Co-operative academy students took part in the
Debate Mate Cup competition at Manchester University.
The students engaged in debating some tough issues
and the standard was high. Our students won three out
of six debates which Loreto High eventually won.
Year 10 student Jessica Wong was nominated for the
‘Most improved female speaker’ in the Manchester
region by Debate Mate mentors and her team and staff
were delighted when it was announced she had won.
Congratulations and well done to Jessica on a fantastic
Jubilee Street Party at Crab Lane Primary School
Friday 1 June saw Crab Lane School car park
transformed into an exciting and buzzing street party.
All the children (294) sat together to enjoy a party lunch
which the catering staff had worked hard to produce.
We also had an entertainer who mingled with the
children performing magic and making balloon flowers
and animals much to the children’s delight.
During the week the children had been learning about
the jubilee and had produced some fabulous work - in
particular year 4 had researched the Queen’s ancestors
back to the House of Hanover 1714 and produced an
informative and beautiful family tree and Reception
produced some colourful portraits of the Queen.
This was a perfect way to end our busy half term which
started with an Ofsted inspection in which we were
judged to be a good school. Ofsted found ‘it is not
The Co-operative Academy of Manchester gardening
club has been so successful this year that they had to
hold a plant sale to sell off their surplus plants!
Pupils, staff, and the local community have all benefited
from this years bumper crop, and all the money raised
will go towards next year’s seeds and compost.
Well done to the gardening club and lets hope next
years will be even better.
outstanding because recent initiatives have not had
time to impact fully.........’ which is further cause for
celebration as it confirms our plans are on target.

Player Presentation for MHA Students
4
School News
Students from MHA were invited to Manchester United’s first-team training ground to meet United stars as a
reward for their academic achievements this year.
A select group of MHA students joined pupils from the six other schools from across Manchester visited the
Carrington site to be presented with certificates from Red defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones and were
also able to grill the players in an open question and answer session.
Following the meet and greet, Chris Smalling said, “It’s great to see pupils who have done well at school and be
able to celebrate their achievements and reward them.”
A teacher added, “Today has had a great effect on the students; they’ve been looking forward to it all week
and hopefully it will entice them to behave better at school knowing that there are rewards like this for good
behaviour.” He continued, “It’s a great opportunity to be able to work with the Foundation. Obviously the name
‘United’ is massive and it’s good for the kids to have heroes that they can look up to, that will hopefully inspire
them to be positive in whatever they do in school or otherwise.”
The Manchester Health Academy are part of the Foundation’s Hub of the Community project, which provides
full time Community Development Officers to work with young people at the Academy and with the primary
schools in the surrounding area. The structure allows long-term relationships to be built between MU
Foundation coaches and teaching staff, children and parents, meaning that the MU Foundation has first-hand
knowledge of the issues relevant to them.
Paralympic Star visits
Newall Green High School
16 lucky students from Newall Green High
School went to Sportcity to watch Jonny
Peacock bring home the gold in the 100m
Sprint. The sun was shining and the children
were in high spirits as they cheered on an
array of British talent all heading for the 2012
Paralympic Games in London.
It was an amazing trip out and got them all
very excited about the Olympics which is
now just weeks away. In particular, they were
excited about seeing 18 year old blade sprinter
Jonnie Peacock who visited the school the
next day.
Jonnie arrived at school to a massive applause
from the students who not only saw him win
his first gold medal, but also witnessed him set
a new personal best. The children were full of
questions for the athlete and wanted to know
not just about his blade, but also what his
favourite computer game was!
He brought his blade to show the students
who all seemed fascinated about how heavy it
was. Unfortunately he did not bring the gold
medal as he had already given it to his mum.
The students took Jonnie out on the school
field where he explained how to prepare for
a race and the students all tried out the 100m
sprint… even some of the staff!! The students
then spent half an hour chatting with Jonnie
and getting pictures and autographs. What a
great day!
Art fit for the Queen!
Year 8 students from Newall Green
High School have been busy
creating an installation entitled
‘After the Celebration’. The mood
of the piece is a celebration and
shows what they think the Queens
living room may be like after she
has gone to bed after the Jubilee
celebrations!
The work has been produced as
part of the ‘Big Think Initiative’
which assists in promoting
communication skills.
The work will form part of the
Newall Green Art Festival being
held in the school hall on Thursday
12 July. The Festival is open to the
public and you are most welcome
to visit. For further information
Pupils from The Barlow solve the Bog Body Mystery
A group of pupils from The Barlow RC High School
recently visited Manchester Museum. They took
part in an exciting Forensic Science Workshop,
investigating the mystery appearance of a Bog Body.
The session provided the pupils from Years 7, 8,
and 9 with knowledge of real-life applications of
science and gave them first-hand experience of
using laboratory equipment. They took on the role
of Forensic Experts and by analysing clues and
completing a scientific practical, they worked to solve
the mystery surrounding a find of unknown human
remains.
The pupils were given a scenario which saw them
examining DNA samples and soil acidity. Using their
investigative skills they had to deduce whether or not
a body that had been found, was that of a man who
had recently gone missing or whether the remains
could have been preserved for hundreds of years.
The workshop was based around the idea of the
‘Lindow Man’ (the preserved body discovered in a
peat bog at Lindow Moss near Wilmslow in August
1984.)
The pupils undertook an archaeological finds
analysis and learnt how to use the periodic table
to understand the reactivity of metals and how soil
composition effects the degradation of different
materials.
Science Teacher Miss Carle said, “The workshop
was very informative and the pupils had a lot of fun
solving the mystery. It gave them the opportunity to
see how genetic information is used to solve crimes
and helped them understand the importance of
accuracy.”

The Keilder Challenge for Saint
Paul’s and Piper Hill
Pupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School and Piper
Hill School in Wythenshawe took part in the Fieldfare
Kielder Challenge, an inclusive national outdoor
adventure event and competition.
The Challenge is designed to encourage, promote and
facilitate the enjoyment of countryside activities for
all. The challenge is based on outdoor problem solving
games, designed to test the skills of a team to see how
they communicate, plan, support, solve and evaluate
their performance. The games aim to challenge skills in
teams of eight young people aged 13 to 16 (four with
and four without disabilities).
The schools took part in several activities and all the
team members played an active role in solving the
challenges; the inclusion of everyone was a key goal of
the team.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils,” explained
Ms Nikki Doig, PE teacher at Saint Paul’s. “The day
involved a series of outdoor problem solving activities
that tested the skills of the team; it was good to see
everyone working together, communicating, planning
and then evaluating their ideas and actions.”
Ms Doig added: “I was delighted to see the way our
pupils embraced the spirit of the challenge, working as
friendly, unified and integrated teams.”
“The Kielder Challenge is an excellent opportunity for
able bodied and disabled students to work together
in a fully inclusive, challenging and rewarding way,”
added Mr Jonno Curtis from Piper Hill. “The pupils from
Saint Paul’s worked well with the Piper Hill students
and enabled the whole team to access the competition
fully.”
Saint Paul’s at Commonwealth
Summit
Pupils at Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in
Wythenshawe took part in a two day Commonwealth
Youth Summit in Manchester.
The Year 10 students took part in workshops to help
with their confidence and public speaking; they all
took on the role of a Prime Minister, President or
Foreign Minister of a Commonwealth Country. They
had to research key areas including Education, Poverty
and Health in relation to their country and they then
debated these issues at a mock Commonwealth
Heads of State meeting. They had to negotiate with
other countries and find solutions on these areas.
They then wrote a communiqué which was handed to
a local councillor.
“In the workshops the pupils discussed global issues
and concerns that young people have throughout the
Commonwealth,” explained Ms Laura Huddleston from
Saint Paul’s. “They also debated local and national
issues and solutions affecting the Commonwealth.
Each person took on the role of a country within the
Commonwealth and discussed issues that directly
affected their country, presenting them to the
Secretary General.”
Ms Huddleston added: “We were delighted that,
following the event, four pupils from the group
were selected to travel to London to visit two High
Commissions and meet with MP’s regarding local and
national issues.”

We Face Forward is a season of contemporary art and
music from West Africa, celebrated across Manchester’s
galleries, museums, music venues and public spaces from
2 June to 16 September as part of London 2012 Festival.
The exhibitions, concerts, events and community
activities recognise the links between West Africa and
Manchester as well as exploring ideas of economic
and cultural exchange, environment and sustainability
and the place of tradition in contemporary culture. It is
the first major collaboration between Manchester City
Galleries and Whitworth Art Gallery, with music curated
by Manchester Museum and Band on the Wall.
Story Lab – the Summer Reading
Challenge 2012
The annual Summer Reading Challenge (SRC)
launches on 30 June.
The evidence shows that those children taking part
in SRC do not experience the same educational
dip as others who do not continue reading during
the summer holidays. We aim to get 5,000 children
across Manchester involved. Libraries can offer you
class visits and assemblies in order to promote the
Challenge.
Please contact your local library, or email us (as
below) if you are interested in these visits.
Children aged five and over can pick up their FREE
Story Lab pack from the Library. If they complete the
SRC (by reading six books), they will win a certificate
and medal. They will also be entered into a prize draw
Delphine & Domingo
¡Hola! from Delphine & Domingo, we are a professional
and internationally respected flamenco guitarist and
dancer specialising in school performances all over the
UK.
Children love moving, dancing and music wherever
they are no matter what their first language is. We have
found that communication by music and dance can
quite naturally take the place of words.
Our experience over may years has led us to evolve our
own especially created performances with participation
suitable for all ages and all abilities. We have been to
many schools of all varieties with some wishing to
emphasise movement while others prefer to focus on
flamenco guitar music, geography, history, etc.
Not only have we found that each school is different but
there are also recognised differences between the years.
A challenge at times, but, something that we are well
capable of rising to.
Warwick Preparatory School wrote;
“you are so much more than entertainment - there is
a strong teaching and learning content to your work
- your appeal is also cross-curricular (music, dance,
A Liverpool school e-mailed in June 2009
you did with the children. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed
it. The children are really keen to learn to speak Spanish
now. They all love the Spanish culture and traditions
and are all eager to learn more. Thank you for sparking
our children with the enthusiasm to learn more outside
their own culture.”
