Every man and woman, also every child who has reached the age <strong>of</strong><br />

responsibility, stands before God either condemned or acquitted. This<br />

condition does not depend upon social status, nor upon educational<br />

attainments or otherwise, not even upon religious pr<strong>of</strong>ession, or lack<br />

<strong>of</strong> religious pretensions. But it depends solely upon their attitude<br />

toward God, and toward the Son <strong>of</strong> His love. 77<br />

This reflected how there was a unifying <strong>Christian</strong> environment which<br />

commandeered the vehicles <strong>of</strong> public discourse, penetrating home and<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice, school and hospital, street and pub, parliament and town hall. <strong>The</strong><br />

agents <strong>of</strong> evangelism were literally everywhere, constantly challenging individuals<br />

about their own religious state. <strong>The</strong>re was no escape. <strong>The</strong> individual<br />

might reject the terms <strong>of</strong> the evangelists’ <strong>of</strong>fer, but could not avoid the<br />

message. Through this vast machinery <strong>of</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> ‘agency’, the discourses<br />

on personal religiosity were circulated.<br />
