Every man and woman, also every child who has reached the age of
responsibility, stands before God either condemned or acquitted. This
condition does not depend upon social status, nor upon educational
attainments or otherwise, not even upon religious profession, or lack
of religious pretensions. But it depends solely upon their attitude
toward God, and toward the Son of His love. 77
This reflected how there was a unifying Christian environment which
commandeered the vehicles of public discourse, penetrating home and
office, school and hospital, street and pub, parliament and town hall. The
agents of evangelism were literally everywhere, constantly challenging individuals
about their own religious state. There was no escape. The individual
might reject the terms of the evangelists’ offer, but could not avoid the
message. Through this vast machinery of Christian ‘agency’, the discourses
on personal religiosity were circulated.
