DANCING TO CONNECT
For thirtythree years, Battery Dance Company has followed its quest for artistic excellence
and social relevance. Whether performing on the worlds’ stages, teaching in New York City
public schools or fostering international cultural exchange, Battery Dance is a collaborative
team that gains through the creative vision, commitment and talent of its various members
and partners. Founded and led by choreographer Jonathan Hollander, a Fulbright Lecturer,
Battery Dance began working in Germany in 2006 through the award‐winning “Dances for
the Blue House” project in Breisach and Freiburg. „Dancing to Connect“ (DTC) followed in
2007 in Freiburg, featured as the grand finale of the Theater Freiburg Season. Now, in
2008, Battery Dance has developed DTC projects in Stuttgart, Berlin and Freiburg, in which
18 high schools will take part.
DRASTIC ACTION is a New York City‐based modern dance company under the
artistic direction of choreographer Aviva Geismar. Geismar‘s dances stem from a fascination
with the nuances and paradoxes of human behavior. In July 2006 Drastic Action, in
partnership with the Battery Dance Company, led „Dances for the Blue House“, a
performance and education project focusing on the legacy of the Holocaust. Geismar
created a site‐specific piece in the streets of Breisach, Germany, the birthplace of her
grandparents, which paid tribute to the town‘s lost Jewish community and the work by local
residents to memorialize that community. The company is delighted to be back in Germany
for a third summer of teaching and performing.
Das Deutsch‐Amerikanische Zentrum/James‐F.‐Byrnes‐Institut e.V. dankt den Förderern und
Sponsoren für ihre großzügige Unterstützung dieser Veranstaltung.
