222 for Sweet Lil Boo
SL Jaybird soars with 221
Mike Mowery and Sweet Lil Boo, by Peptoboonsmal, owned by Rancharrah, is the current first go-round
leader with 222 points.
It was a sweet moment for
NCHA past president Mike
Mowery, when he rode out of
the arena yesterday on Sweet Lil
Boo, with 222 points.
“This was the first time I’ve
really gotten her demonstrated
to her full ability,” said Mowery,
who rides the Peptoboonsmal
daughter for Rancharrah, Reno,
NV.
“It was a very rewarding
run for me and her,” he added.
“It’s bothered me that she hasn’t
gotten the recognition that I think
she deserves with this colt crop.
“We’ve just had some bad
luck and what I was hoping for
was a little good luck.”
Mowery’s luck came in the
form of two cows late in the fifth
bunch.
“We had some good cows that
were still in there and we were
able to get them easy enough
without having to cut something
else,” he explained. “That usually
sets up a pretty good run, especially
if the cows are as good as
you think they’re going to be.
“This mare has a big heart
and is fun to work,” he noted.
“When you have one that is that
special and you’ve had a little
tough luck, you tend to secondguess
yourself and wonder why
things don’t fall into place like
they should.”
Sweet Lil Boo lost a cow in
the second go-round of the Futu-
Winston Hansma (left) scored 221 yesterday on SL Jaybird, by Smart Little Jerry, owned by Mica Motes, Weatherford, TX (right); far right, Darren Simpkins rode SDP Debbie Dream,
by Dual Rey, to score 219 points for Buffalo Ranch, Farmington, UT.
rity; she qualified for the NCHA Super
Stakes Finals, but lost a cow there, as
well.
“The Super Stakes was my fault,”
admitted Mowery. “I cut a bad cow and
put her down too quick, before she was
really set on it. I don’t know if I could
have held it anyway, but I didn’t help
her get started on it.”
Mowery has had his own streak of
bad luck in the past year. Just weeks
before the Futurity, he was tossed off of
a young horse and laid up with injuries
until five days before the start of the
event. Then two days after the Super
Stakes, he got in another wreck with a
horse and was out of the saddle for four
more weeks, returning two days before
the start of the Breeders Invitational.
“Neil Roger helped me during the
Futurity and really saved my life,”
Mowery noted. “And Gary Bellenfant
saved my life and kept my colts going
so I could show at Vegas.”
Sweet Lil Boo is a full sister to
Sweet Lil Pepto, the red roan stallion
that Mowery rode for Rancharrah to
win the Breeders Invitational Derby,
and as a finalist in the NCHA Futurity,
Derby and Super Stakes, as well as the
Memphis Futurity.
“As far as cow sense and their ability
to read a cow, they’re almost the
same,” said Mowery of the siblings.
“She’s a little more intense on a cow
Derby Open leaders include, left to right: Phil Rapp with 219 on Autumn Acre, by Bob Acre Doc, owned by Tommy Manion, Aubrey, TX; Paul Hansma with 218.5 points aboard
Sister CD, by CD Olena, owned by Skip Queen, Lipan, TX; and Matt Gaines with 218 riding Little Pepto Patti, by Peptoboonsmal, owned by Bill and Lisa Hefley, Little Rock, AR.
than he was, but they are both pure
cow horses. The simpler you keep it at
home for them, the better they are for
you.
“It’s very rewarding because you
don’t have to do a lot of extensive
training. They are really smart about
a cow. Everything just comes to them
naturally. All you need to do is keep the
kinks out and keep the cow-fresh off of
them.”
SL Jaybird
Three-time NCHA Derby winner Winston
Hansma came riding SL Jaybird
next-to-last in the second bunch, but
found his cattle.
“We were just fortunate that they
both just happened to be right there
when we needed them and we didn’t
have to spend a lot of time digging
around trying to find them,” noted
Hansma, who rode the Smart Little
Jerry son, owned by Mica Motes, to earn
221 points.
Hansma had trained SL Jaybird for
Renee Carter, Santo, TX. Carter rode the
gelding successfully in weekend shows,
but did not have much luck showing
him in limited age events. When
Carter considered selling him, Hansma
thought he would make a good mount
for Mica, the daughter of Hansma’s partner,
Danny Motes, Weatherford, TX.
Mica, who was champion of the
2001 NCHA Amateur Derby on Starring
CD, when she was 14, won the go-round
and at The Non Pro (non-pro division)
riding SL Jaybird for the first time. She
will show him this week for just the
second time.
Hansma is currently leading the
NCHA Open World standings aboard
the stallion CD Lights, who he owns in
partnership with Danny Motes. Motes
owns Delight Of My Life, the dam of CD
Lights, and the horse that Hansma rode
to win the 1997 NCHA Derby.
“We’re only halfway through and
it’s already been a long year,” said
Hansma, whose main focus is training
limited age event horses (CD Lights, by
CD Lena, won four major limited age
championships under Hansma with
scores of 225 or more). “Winning the
World was never our goal. We mostly
wanted to keep him out in the public
eye since he missed his five-year-old
season, and get his earnings over
$200,000.
CD Lights, whose current earnings
are $194,500, injured a hock and was
laid up following surgery at five.
“I’m going to go to shows that are
convenient,” said Hansma. “I’ve got
what I think are some really nice threeyear-olds
and training horses is my first
love.
“If it works (World Championship
race) it works. If it’s tight, hopefully, I’ll
have the freshest horse come the Finals
in Amarillo.”
SDP Debbies Dream
SDP Debbies Dream and Darren
Simpkins, who rides the Dual Rey
daughter for Buffalo Ranch, Farmington,
UT, made the finals of the Augusta
Futurity and the Limited Horse at the
Breeders Invitational.
“I’ve had some tough luck getting
her shown, but she’s started to mature
and get stronger just in the last couple
of months,” said Simpkins, who scored
219 points riding the full sister to TR
Dual Rey on Friday.
“I was an add-on with her in the
Super Stakes, but I had a really good
draw here and was able to cut some
good cows for her.”
