It was a sweet moment for<br />

NCHA past president Mike<br />

Mowery, when he rode out of<br />

the arena yesterday on Sweet Lil<br />

Boo, with 222 points.<br />

“This was the first time I’ve<br />

really gotten her demonstrated<br />

to her full ability,” said Mowery,<br />

who rides the Peptoboonsmal<br />

daughter for Rancharrah, Reno,<br />

NV.<br />

“It was a very rewarding<br />

run for me and her,” he added.<br />

“It’s bothered me that she hasn’t<br />

gotten the recognition that I think<br />

she deserves with this colt crop.<br />

“We’ve just had some bad<br />

luck and what I was hoping for<br />

was a little good luck.”<br />

Mowery’s luck came in the<br />

form of two cows late in the fifth<br />

bunch.<br />

“We had some good cows that<br />

were still in there and we were<br />

able to get them easy enough<br />

without having to cut something<br />

else,” he explained. “That usually<br />

sets up a pretty good run, especially<br />

if the cows are as good as<br />

you think they’re going to be.<br />

“This mare has a big heart<br />

and is fun to work,” he noted.<br />

“When you have one that is that<br />

special and you’ve had a little<br />

tough luck, you tend to secondguess<br />

yourself and wonder why<br />

things don’t fall into place like<br />

they should.”<br />

rity; she qualified for the NCHA Super<br />

Stakes Finals, but lost a cow there, as<br />

well.<br />

“The Super Stakes was my fault,”<br />

admitted Mowery. “I cut a bad cow and<br />

put her down too quick, before she was<br />

really set on it. I don’t know if I could<br />

have held it anyway, but I didn’t help<br />

her get started on it.”<br />

Mowery has had his own streak of<br />

bad luck in the past year. Just weeks<br />

before the Futurity, he was tossed off of<br />

a young horse and laid up with injuries<br />

until five days before the start of the<br />

event. Then two days after the Super<br />

Stakes, he got in another wreck with a<br />

horse and was out of the saddle for four<br />

more weeks, returning two days before<br />

the start of the Breeders Invitational.<br />

“Neil Roger helped me during the<br />

Futurity and really saved my life,”<br />

Mowery noted. “And Gary Bellenfant<br />

saved my life and kept my colts going<br />

so I could show at Vegas.”<br />

Sweet Lil Boo is a full sister to<br />

Sweet Lil Pepto, the red roan stallion<br />

that Mowery rode for Rancharrah to<br />

win the Breeders Invitational Derby,<br />

and as a finalist in the NCHA Futurity,<br />

Derby and Super Stakes, as well as the<br />

Memphis Futurity.<br />

“As far as cow sense and their ability<br />

to read a cow, they’re almost the<br />

same,” said Mowery of the siblings.<br />

“She’s a little more intense on a cow<br />

than he was, but they are both pure<br />

cow horses. The simpler you keep it at<br />

home for them, the better they are for<br />

you.<br />

“It’s very rewarding because you<br />

don’t have to do a lot of extensive<br />

training. They are really smart about<br />

a cow. Everything just comes to them<br />

naturally. All you need to do is keep the<br />

kinks out and keep the cow-fresh off of<br />

them.”<br />

SL Jaybird<br />

Three-time NCHA Derby winner Winston<br />

Hansma came riding SL Jaybird<br />

next-to-last in the second bunch, but<br />

found his cattle.<br />

“We were just fortunate that they<br />

both just happened to be right there<br />

when we needed them and we didn’t<br />

have to spend a lot of time digging<br />

around trying to find them,” noted<br />

Hansma, who rode the Smart Little<br />

Jerry son, owned by Mica Motes, to earn<br />

221 points.<br />

Hansma had trained SL Jaybird for<br />

Renee Carter, Santo, TX. Carter rode the<br />

gelding successfully in weekend shows,<br />

but did not have much luck showing<br />

him in limited age events. When<br />

Carter considered selling him, Hansma<br />

thought he would make a good mount<br />

for Mica, the daughter of Hansma’s partner,<br />

Danny Motes, Weatherford, TX.<br />

Mica, who was champion of the<br />

2001 NCHA Amateur Derby on Starring<br />

CD, when she was 14, won the go-round<br />

and at The Non Pro (non-pro division)<br />

riding SL Jaybird for the first time. She<br />

will show him this week for just the<br />

second time.<br />

Hansma is currently leading the<br />

NCHA Open World standings aboard<br />

the stallion CD Lights, who he owns in<br />

partnership with Danny Motes. Motes<br />

owns Delight Of My Life, the dam of CD<br />

Lights, and the horse that Hansma rode<br />

to win the 1997 NCHA Derby.<br />

“We’re only halfway through and<br />

it’s already been a long year,” said<br />

Hansma, whose main focus is training<br />

limited age event horses (CD Lights, by<br />

CD Lena, won four major limited age<br />

championships under Hansma with<br />

scores of 225 or more). “Winning the<br />

World was never our goal. We mostly<br />

wanted to keep him out in the public<br />

eye since he missed his five-year-old<br />

season, and get his earnings over<br />

$200,000.<br />

CD Lights, whose current earnings<br />

are $194,500, injured a hock and was<br />

laid up following surgery at five.<br />

“I’m going to go to shows that are<br />

convenient,” said Hansma. “I’ve got<br />

what I think are some really nice threeyear-olds<br />

and training horses is my first<br />

love.<br />

“If it works (World Championship<br />

race) it works. If it’s tight, hopefully, I’ll<br />

have the freshest horse come the Finals<br />

in Amarillo.”<br />

SDP Debbies Dream<br />

SDP Debbies Dream and Darren<br />

Simpkins, who rides the Dual Rey<br />

daughter for Buffalo Ranch, Farmington,<br />

UT, made the finals of the Augusta<br />

Futurity and the Limited <strong>Horse</strong> at the<br />

Breeders Invitational.<br />

“I’ve had some tough luck getting<br />

her shown, but she’s started to mature<br />

and get stronger just in the last couple<br />

of months,” said Simpkins, who scored<br />

219 points riding the full sister to TR<br />

Dual Rey on Friday.<br />

“I was an add-on with her in the<br />

Super Stakes, but I had a really good<br />

draw here and was able to cut some<br />

good cows for her.”<br />
