The Leo Walker Tattersfield Collection<br />

of Chinese Jades<br />

Leo Walker Tattersfield was born in<br />

Auckland on the 6th of December 1910<br />

and died in his eighties. He owned a wool<br />

trading company and travelled all over<br />

the world each year to obtain orders for<br />

the New Zealand wool production for the<br />

following year. In the 1950’s he began<br />

to sell wool to China and he started to<br />

visit Beijing every year. Here he became<br />

interested in the jade markets which were<br />

held in the streets on certain days and he<br />

1. A pale celadon bamboo<br />

carving, finely carved in openwork<br />

in the shape of a curled bamboo<br />

sprig with delicate sprouting<br />

3. Three pale celadon jade bi<br />

discs, the first carved with raised<br />

dots, the second with raised dots<br />

s-shaped motif, two with wood<br />

rings, comprising a white and<br />

russet ring carved with two<br />

stylized dragons chasing a flaming<br />

colour decorated with raised dots,<br />

clouds, together with an agate<br />

began to collect small jade carvings from<br />

time to time. Over the years he became<br />

a regular visitor of the jade dealers in the<br />

antiques shops in Beijing, often acquiring<br />

new jades for his personal collection as he<br />

became more knowledgeable. The result<br />

is a jade collection unique in New Zealand.<br />

The collection was loaned to the Auckland<br />

Museum in 1972 and part of it had been on<br />

display until 2002.<br />

11. A pale celadon jade pendant<br />

of rectangular form, carved<br />

to one side with a goat with a<br />

lingzhi spray in its mouth and<br />

staring at a bat, the reverse with a<br />

chrysanthemum spray, a pierced<br />
