Dear Collector
This Bulletin brings subjects as diverse as cultural milestones,
scientific breakthroughs and one of the most significant art
movements in Australian history.
First, we commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the Queen’s
Coronation with classic Cecil Beaton images of Her Majesty
and the spectacular St Edward’s Crown. This crown is worn
only once in a sovereign's lifetime, during the coronation.
Later in June the International Post series continues with a
new twist on the theme of panoramic images of Australia.
Previous issues used photographic images, this release brings
images of Australia as depicted by Papunya Tula artists. These
stamps will make splendid ambassadors for Australia as they
travel around the globe.
Cocos (Keeling) Islands Shoreline Birds wraps up June,
with a delightful se-tenant strip design illustrated by well
known bird artist, Kevin Stead. Until 27 July, visitors to the
National Philatelic Centre can view the current exhibition,
‘Away with the Birds’ (see page 20).
July sees Australia and the world reflecting on the 50 th
anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA. Our
special issue of two stamps will mark this important discovery
with reference to Australia’s role in global genetic research.
Also in July we will release the final designs in the Nature of
Australia: Rainforests issue. The Nature of Australia series of
definitive stamp issues started in 1996 and all stamps in the
series have been designed by Wayne Rankin.
Collectors of postal stationery and anyone interested in
Australia’s military history, will be interested in the two new
commemorative PSEs, the centenary of the Royal Australian
Army Medical Corps and the 50 th anniversary of women’s
enlistment into Australia’s part time Army, the Citizen
Military Forces.
Together and individually these stamp and stationery
issues bring Australia’s past, present and future to life.
I am looking forward to presenting our August-September
issues to you in the next Stamp Bulletin, when once again
milestones in Australian history will feature.
Until then,
Coronation Heading
24 January dd 2 June Month 2003 YYYY
Golden Jubilee
The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took
place on 2 June 1953, more than twelve months
after her accession. Hundred of thousands of
Britons and over 200,000 tourists from other
countries descended upon London for the
coronation. Representatives of the Lords, the
Commons and other public interests and
organisations in Britain, the Prime Ministers
and leading citizens of the Commonwealth
countries, and representatives of foreign states
were also present.
The Queen rode from Buckingham Palace to
Westminster Abbey in the ornate State or ‘Glass
Coach’, preceded by a long procession which
included members of the royal family and other
dignitaries.
The coronation ceremony, which was conducted
by the Archbishop of Canterbury, has
remained essentially the same since before the
Norman Conquest in 1066. Elizabeth swore the
coronation oath whereby she undertook to rule
according to law, to exercise justice with mercy
and to maintain the Church of England. She
was then anointed, blessed and consecrated and
crowned by the archbishop – at which point
trumpets sounded, the Abbey bells pealed, and
guns at the Tower of London saluted.
Following a long and colourful procession
back to Buckingham Palace, the Queen, the
Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the
Royal Family, together with the maids of honour,
appeared on the balcony to acknowledge
the hundreds of thousands who had gathered
outside the palace to cheer the new sovereign.
Later that evening a huge fireworks display
entertained the crowds on the Embankment
and Westminster Bridge. Across Britain and the
Commonwealth bonfires were lit and street
parties were held to celebrate the new
monarch’s coronation.
Coronation
Golden Jubilee
The designs
This issue is designed by Cathleen Cram
(Australia Post Design Studio). The stamps
feature a Cecil Beaton photograph of the
Queen taken during the coronation year and
the crown used in the coronation ceremony –
the St Edward’s Crown. Another stunning
Cecil Beaton portrait of the newly crowned
monarch is featured on the miniature sheet.
Queen Elizabeth II (50c)
This formal portrait of the Queen was taken in
Buckingham Palace during 1953.
St Edward’s Crown ($2.45)
The crown used in the coronation dates from
1660 when it was commissioned for the
coronation of King Charles II. The depressed
central arches indicated it is the crown of a
kingdom. The gold framework is set with
about 440 precious and semi-precious stones.
The image is from the Royal Collection Picture
Library at Windsor Castle.
Stamp and coin cover
This splendid stamp and coin cover
includes an uncirculated 50c
aluminium-bronze coin
designed especially to
commemorate the
Golden Jubilee of Queen
Elizabeth’s Coronation.
On the coin’s reverse is
a herald-like design with the
Royal Insignia and the Queen’s cypher,
‘EIIR’ along the central axis. These are
flanked by Australia’s Federation star and
a sprig of wattle.
This magnificent crown is worn only once in
a sovereign's lifetime, during the coronation. At
the end of the coronation service, when the
sovereign retires into St Edward’s Chapel, this
Crown is replaced by the Imperial State Crown.
The miniature sheet
The miniature sheet features one of the iconic
images of the coronation – that of the newly
crowned monarch in all her robes and holding
the Orb and Sceptre. The photograph is from
the Picture Library of the Victoria and Albert
Museum in London.
In the miniature sheet image, the Queen
wears the Imperial State Crown, one of the
most beautiful and priceless crowns ever made.
It is adorned with 2,700 diamonds and other
precious stones, most conspicuous of which are
the great ruby of the Black Prince, the sapphire
of Edward the Confessor and the four long
pearl drops known as Queen Elizabeth’s earrings.
At the front of the crown is the second
‘star of Africa’, cut from the famous Cullinan
The coin’s obverse features the Ian
Rank-Broadley portrait of the Queen.
The stamp and coin cover is priced at
just $11.95 and will make an outstanding
addition to any collection of stamps, coins
or royal memorabilia.
ART of PAPUNYA TULA
This set of four stamps brings a new focus to
Australia’s International Post range. Art of
Papunya Tula redefines ‘panoramas of
Australia’ with powerful images that are at once
physical, cultural and spiritual maps of the
country and its people.
The designs capture the subtlety and sophistication
of Papunya Tula artists today and
demonstrate their vigour and depth of talent.
The immensely successful work of contemporary
Western Desert artists is one of the most
significant art movements in Australian history.
It began in 1971 at Papunya (about 240 km west
of Alice Springs) when senior men, with the
encouragement of young school teacher Geoff
Bardon, began painting images drawn from
$1.10 Ningura Napurrula (Pintupi),
untitled, 2002
The designs in this painting are associated
with the rock hole site of Walyuta, south-west
of Mantati Outstation, about 70 km west of
the Kintore Community.
The roundel is the rock hole and the lines are
the sand hills surrounding the area. In mythological
times, an old woman passed through
this site during her travels towards the east.
This old woman is said to be a ‘bit of a devildevil’
as she kills and eats people.
Ningura Napurrula (Pintupi) was born at
Watulka, south of the Kiwirrkura Community,
c.1938. She has been represented in several
group exhibitions. She had a solo exhibition in
Melbourne in 2000.
Beyond its success as an art movement, the
art of Papunya Tula has helped preserve traditional
cultural aspirations, protect tribal lands
and revive ancestral beliefs of community and
social order.
As well as the stamps the issue includes a
stamp pack, first day cover and a set of four
maximum cards. The $3.30 design will also be
produced as a postcard. Postcards are available
from participating Post retail outlets.
untitled, 2001
NAATA NUNGURRAYI
AUSTRALIA
This painting uses designs associated with the
rock hole and soakage water site of Marrapinti,
west of the Kiwirrkura Community, about
700 km west of Alice Springs.
The arcs in the work represent the rocky hills
surrounding the area. A large group of senior
women camped at this site to perform the ceremonies
associated with the area. While there
they gathered the edible berries known as
kampurarrpa or desert raisin. These berries are
eaten direct from the bush or they are ground
to use in making a type of damper.
Naata Nungurrayi (Pintupi) was born at the
site of Kumil, west of the Pollock Hills in
Western Australia, c.1932. She began painting
for Papunya Tula Artists in early 1996 and has
been represented in several group exhibitions
around Australia.

INTERNATIONAL POST
Papunya
The settlement of Papunya was a 1960s social experiment.
The area housed people from five main tribal groups whose
roots spread out into the surrounding desert. Through
painting the artists remembered their country and
maintained ties to it.
In 1972 the artists formed Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd,
named for the Honey Ant Ancestor's Dreaming site, at
Papunya, a site shared equally by the traditional Aboriginal
groups in Central Australia and the Western Desert region.
Since then the art, originally conceived as a means of
educating a younger generation about cultural matters, has
$2.20 Graham Tjupurrula (Pintupi), untitled,
2001
GRAHAM TJUPURRULA
AUSTRALIA
A Tingari story at Timmalnga, a rock hole
site west of Lake Mackay in Pintupi country,
is the subject of this painting. The site relates
to the travels of a poisonous snake. The
central roundel is the rock hole and the lines
on each side are the creeks running into it.
Generally, the Tingari are mythical characters
of the Dreaming who travelled great distances.
They performed rituals and created and
shaped sites. Their adventures and travels are
enshrined in song cycles. These stories are
taught to today’s youth – after initiation – and
provide a context for contemporary customs.
Graham Tjupurrula (Pintupi) was born in
1975 and lives in the Pintupi homelands
between Kintore and Kiwirrkura in Western
Australia. One of the new generation of artists,
he started painting a little more than a year ago,
and has had an exhibition in Alice Springs.
17 June 2003
evolved. In particular and in response to growing interest
from non Aboriginal peoples, styles have changed to protect
secret/sacred symbolism. Paintings are larger now.
Individual artists have developed personal styles, with many
artists winning national and international acclaim.
The outstation movements of the early 1980s saw a shift
from Papunya to Pintupi country. Today Kintore, just inside
the Western Australian border is the artistic hub of the enterprise.
Between 20 and 30 artists work at the artists’ house
almost daily. Most of the original ‘painting men’ have died,
but a new generation of artists is now at work, maintaining
the vitality of the company.
In the 1990s women who had previously been restricted
to helper roles, usually for male artist relatives, began to
express their own visions, experiences and stories.
This work also relates to the Tingari cycle. It
depicts designs associated with the rock hole
site of Wakula, west of Jupiter Well.
In mythological times a large group of
Tingari men passed through this site during
their travels east. Events associated with the
Tingari cycle are secret so details of the stories
are not shared with the public.
Dini Campbell Tjampitjinpa (Pintupi)
c.1945-2000 was born in Pintupi country west
of Jupiter Well in Western Australia. He is represented
in the National Gallery of Victoria and
the Supreme Court of NT in Darwin, and has
had exhibitions in New York and Melbourne.
Genetics 1953 - 2003
This special issue of two stamps marks the 50 th
meeting of the Genetics Society of Australia and
world wide celebrations of the 50 th anniversary
of the discovery of DNA. Both events coincide
with the International Congress of Genetics –
the world’s most prestigious genetics conference
– which this year is being held in Melbourne
(from 6 to 11 July 2003).
The designs
The designer (Rod Oliver of Fragile Design)
uses colour, geographic and cultural references,
and his artistic interpretation of two iconic
images of the science of genetics to tell the story
of Genetics 1953-2003.
The vivid colours remind us of laboratory
samples stained with fluorescent dyes. The
globe highlights Australia’s important role in
genetic research. The strips of alternating dark
and light bands evoke gel patterns used in DNA
research and analysis.
The stamp designs are: ‘DNA: double helix’
and ‘Kangaroo chromosomes’. By using artistic
interpretations of these structures, rather than
photography or microscopy, the designer
reminds that a spark of creative vision often
triggers scientific breakthroughs.
DNA double helix
This design is the artist’s interpretation of
DNA’s structure, a ‘double helix’ sometimes
described as complementary spirals connected
by a ladder of alternating base pairs.
8 July 2003
Looking back
An Austrian monk, Gregor Mendel, described the basic
principles of genetic inheritance in the 1860s but it took
almost 100 years for scientists to arrive at a general
consensus about the role of deoxyribonucleic acid or
‘DNA’ in the process. By the 1950s many scientists
believed that the chromosomes in a cell’s nucleus were
involved in transmitting heritable characteristics and that
chromosomes were primarily DNA. The big question was,
“How does it work?”
No matter how simple or complex the organism, each
of its cells carries all the information not just for its own
functions, but for the functions needed by every cell in
that organism.
The structure of DNA was also a mystery until 1953,
when James D Watson and Francis Crick published their
hypothesis, entitled ‘Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids:
A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid’ in the British
journal Nature (April 25, 1953. volume 171:737-738.).
And, as it happened, Watson and Crick’s proposed
structure also pointed the way to the answer to the
question on every one’s mind. ‘How does DNA work?’
Taken with what was already known about cell division,
chromosomes and the chemical composition of DNA, their
elegant ‘double helix’ revealed how chromosomes might
replicate, as well as how they could be used as a template
for making other structural and functional molecules
needed by cells.
Kangaroo chromosomes
This stamp depicts kangaroo chromosomes
during cell division. Chromosomes – which are
primarily DNA – are only visible during some
stages of cell division. Chromosomal DNA is
uncoiled in the cell at rest. In the dividing cell
the chromosomal DNA contracts and coils
making the chromosomes dense and visible. At
this stage the chromosomes are often described
as looking like a cross or ‘x’.
Nature Heading of Australia
RAINFORESTS
These designs continue the Rainforests theme
introduced in February 2003, with the $1.45
Blue orchid design. All the subjects of the
Rainforests issue are found in the Daintree
region of the Wet Tropics.
The rainforest habitat is the latest to appear
in the Nature of Australia series, which started
in 1996. The series depicts different Australian
habitats and the characteristic creatures or
plants found within that habitat.
Wayne Rankin has designed all the stamps
in the Nature of Australia series.
The products
Along with the gummed and self-adhesive
stamps (booklets of ten and 20, rolls of 100 and
200) the issue includes a set of four maximum
cards, a stamp pack and a collector pack.
The stamp pack comprises the se-tenant
block of four 50c stamps released in July plus
the $1.45 Blue orchid stamp released in
February 2003. A first day cover and maximum
card for the Blue orchid design were released in
February 2003. The new designs in the issue
(clockwise from top left) are:
Orange-thighed tree frog (Litoria xanthomera)
This beautiful, bright green tree frog is
characterised by the brilliant orange on its
flanks and throat, and the hindside of its
thighs.
Green-spotted triangle butterfly (Graphium
agamemnon ligatum)
A butterfly of the lowland rainforest, this is
one of four Australian swallowtails known as
‘triangles’ because of their distinctive wing
shape. These brilliantly coloured butterflies
are in constant movement, fluttering from
bloom to bloom.
Yellow-bellied sunbird (Nectarinia jugularis)
These active, tiny birds have long curved bills
and protrusile brush-tipped tongues which
they dip into flowers. Nectar and spiders are
their staple diet and the birds are constantly
on the move to find them. The female’s
underparts are entirely yellow whereas the
adult male has a brilliant metallic blue throat.
Striped possum (Dactylopsila trivirgata)
This small, nocturnal and agile possum stabs
and gouges away bark and rotten wood on
trunks, limbs and fallen logs in search of the
wood-boring grubs and other insects that
form its principal diet.
The majority of Australian Antarctic Territory
(AAT) stamps are used by Australians stationed
at one of the four ANARE stations in the AAT.
About 120 Australians spend a full year at
until the supply ships arrive.
Philatelic mail is not sent to the Antarctic.
Orders and covers submitted for postmarking
are processed in Australia to reflect the supply
ships’ arrival dates at each of the four bases.
Each station has its own unique pictorial postmark.
The first day of issue for each station is
Centenary
of the RAAMC
From the turn of the century – through two
World Wars and a host of lesser conflicts – the
Royal Australian Army Medical Corps
(RAAMC) has supported the Australian army.
Its heritage encompasses a proud tradition of
courage and service to the nation’s soldiers.
Army personnel working in the RAAMC
provide medical and health services to all
members of the Army. The role of the RAAMC
is to firstly maintain the health of the army in
order to ensure it can fight and secondly to deal
with casualties. It is also on call to help in
emergency situations as they arise and to
support troops in peacekeeping assignments.
This commemorative PSE marks 100 years
since the formation of the RAAMC in 1903.
The badge of the RAAMC is in the stamp area
and images of RAAMC personnel at work
throughout the Corp’s history are shown in the
illustration area.
50th Anniversary of Formation
First Day of Issue
4 July 2003
Kew Vic 3101
While the tradition of the Australian Militia or
citizen soldier goes back 200 years, history was
made in June 1953 when women were first
enlisted into Australia’s part-time Army, the
Citizen Military Forces (CMF). In July 2003
Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps
(WRAAC) CMF will celebrate its 50 th
anniversary. This PSE commemorates this
milestone
Enlistment of women into the part-time
army from June 1953 followed government
realisation that the small number in the
WRAAC regular force would not provide a
trained nucleus for quick expansion in time of
war. It was assumed that in such a crisis women
would take over administration tasks, thereby
releasing their male counterparts for combat
duties.
The WRAAC CMF was disbanded in 1976
when females transferred or directly enlisted
into male Service Corps Units. The CMF later
became the ARES (Army Reserve).
The badge of the WRAAC CMF is in the
stamp area and images of WRAAC CMF
personnel at work throughout the Corp’s
history are shown in the illustration area.

50 th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War
This $1 ‘C’ Mintmark Aluminium Bronze
uncirculated coin from the Royal Australian
Mint commemorates the 50 th anniversary of the
end of the Korean War and honours the
veterans who served during this important
chapter in Australia’s history.
The Vladimir Gottwald designed coin
echoes themes used in the Australian National
Korean War Memorial in Canberra. Vertical
lines in the background recall the memorial’s
stainless steel spars – a symbol for the fields of
fallen.
Emerging from this darkest of times is the
dove of peace symbolising hope for the future.
On either side of the dove are the floral
emblems of Australia and South Korea to reflect
ongoing ties between the two countries.
Cocos (Keeling) Islands
Shoreline birds
This se-tenant strip of four stamps depicts a
single shoreline scene with the four birds shown
as they might be found on the shore of a North
Keeling Island lagoon. The illustrator is wellknown
bird artist Kevin Stead.
From left to right in the strip the designs are:
Eastern reef egret (Egretta sacra)
Eastern reef egrets are usually solitary, stalking
their prey in a hunched posture in rock pools or
coral reefs.
The stamp shows the eastern reef egret
searching for prey in the shallows.
Sooty tern (Sterna fuscata)
The black and white sooty tern is a pelagic bird,
coming to land on small, offshore islands
principally to breed. At sea it lives in the air,
rarely settling on the water.
North Keeling Island’s eastern foreshore is
home to a small breeding colony of sooty terns.
The stamp shows a sooty tern flying low over
the foreshore.
16
First day cover
About Cocos (Keeling Islands
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands comprise two remote, tropical
coral atolls in the Indian Ocean about 2770 km north–west of
Perth. The southern atoll is made up of 26 islands. The
northern, single horseshoe shaped atoll, North Keeling Island,
lies 24 km away.
North Keeling Island’s shoreline supports a number of
birds that feed on the small crustaceans that dominate the
shoreline ecology. None of the birds featured in this issue is
endemic to these islands. Sooty terns and eastern reef egrets
nest on North Keeling Island. Ruddy turnstones and whimbrels
are migratory visitors.
Ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres)
The ruddy turnstone is named for its habit of
flipping over stones and shells in search of
crustaceans and molluscs. In June-July this
small animated bird breeds in the far north of
the Northern Hemisphere. It makes a long
yearly migration to southern continents. Small
flocks are observed every year from October to
March on North Keeling Island.
On the stamp ruddy turnstones are shown
flipping over a pebble and a sea urchin.
Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus)
The whimbrel breeds in the far north near the
Arctic Circle, migrating during the winter
months to the warmer southern continents. It
forages for crustaceans and insects by probing
in mud or sand, among rocks, coral and
seaweed.
Whimbrels are most numerous from
September to May. The whimbrel on the stamp
is using its long curved beak to pick up a crab.
