Introduction to Scratch What is Scratch? Scratch is a new programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, games, and animations – and share your creations with others on the web. Scratch is developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten research group at the MIT Media Lab Where can I get Scratch? You can download Scratch for free from the MIT website http://scratch.mit.edu. Scratch is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. From the Scratch website, you can also create an account that allows you to upload and share the scratch projects you create. To download Scratch at home, start here How do I learn Scratch? This workbook and the Scratch workshop will give you an introduction to some of the Scratch basics. To learn more, you can use the resources on the Scratch website, or Google for more information on Scratch – there are a lot of great resources on the web – including some great tutorials on You Tube. Probably the best way to learn Scratch (or any programming language) is to play!! Start up Scratch and try out different things. Remember, you can’t break or hurt your computer using Scratch. LESSON 1: Getting Started with Scratch How Scratch Works In Scratch, we will write programs called SCRIPTS. Each SCRIPT controls an object called a SPRITE. The orange cat that you see when you start up Scratch is an example of a Sprite.
