PLEASE READ THE INTRODUCTORY PAGES CAREFULLY.
This handbook has been written for the purpose of guiding staff and learners through the ACE
Ministries Curriculum in the South African context, from Grade 9 to Grade 12. In the light of ACE
Ministries’ policy on page 77 of the Procedures Manual I, the Educators’ Board, together with many
committed educators, has embraced the vision to help develop further curriculum based on the
S.A. National Curriculum Statements and the new Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements. This will
enhance our learners’ learning experience, without compromising Biblical or educational values or
standards.
INTRODUCTION
The document that follows is the result of much research, and includes input from educators across
the academic spectrum that have had to make the same decisions that you may face when
planning academic projections for your high school learners.
It is the objective of ACE Ministries to remain current and relevant at all times so as to provide each
learner with every opportunity to pursue the career of his/her choice. Some may choose to
complete their Grade 12 (College Entrance) Certificate, while others may opt to write the National
Senior Certificate examination which is endorsed by Umalusi. In all instances we would like you to
rest assured that we have done our God-given duty in preparing our learners for life. If we can
achieve this we will be well on the way to contributing to….
Suggested
Resources
A Projects Manual has been developed for some of the subjects in Grade 9 which will
assist you in implementing the Revised National Curriculum Statement for these
subjects. The projects cover topics which are not specifically covered in the PACEs.
Some resources have been listed that have been produced by other providers. ACE
Ministries South Africa does not necessarily endorse the entire content of these
resources from a moral, philosophical or theological standpoint.
TAKE NOTE:
Please also refer to Graduation Handbook, the
annual NSC Exam Guidelines and the
ACE Ministries Procedures Manuals.
Please read the introductory pages carefully and refer to the key BEFORE using these charts.
Remember that these are guidelines and reflect the minimum requirements for one year’s work.
The ACE programme is a continuous – progress – learning programme, and the guidelines and
charts in this handbook must not be used to lock-step learners according to chronological age or
NB:
These charts must be used in conjunction with the subject information found in the
South African Curriculum Guide with Scope and Sequence for SA PACEs and the
relevant CAPS CDs.
PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE USING THE FOLLOWING CHARTS.
SENIOR PHASE – LEVEL 7-9
1. Subjects/ Time Allocation:
Life Orientation, Technology, Creative Arts and Economic & Management Sciences should each
constitute 7% of the weekly timetable (i.e. 2 hours per week).
Natural Sciences:
recommended: - At least one ½ hour period per week should be spent on group
Science practicals. Refer to the Curriculum Guide at the back of this
book for added information.
Mathematics:
Important Note: Algebra 1 PACEs (1097- 108) have been spread over Grade 8-10 to tie in with
the CAPS syllabus. It is therefore recommended that the REVIEW sections at the end of each
PACE be completed FIRST before starting the new sections of the PACE. This will help learners
to recap the work done in the previous PACEs.
PACE 1075 (4 th edition): This PACE covers Data Handling and Probability and can be very
challenging to most learners. It is recommended that the PACE only be completed at the end
of Grade 7 or even later in the Senior Phase.
Learners who find the Math PACEs in Grade 9 too challenging and have decided to take Math
Literacy as a major in Grade 10-12 should follow the Math Literacy track in Grade 9.
Afrikaans 1 st Additional Language level 9. The minimum requirement is 6 PACEs (5 chosen from
existing PACEs # 17573 – # 17584).
2. Enrichment:
The Readmaster (or appropriate alternative) computer programme should be in full operation
for every learner in the Senior Phase.
Biology 1097-1108 can be ordered with DVDs (# 960301 - 960312) or videos (# 959397 - 959408)
for added tutor assistance and practicals).
Algebra and Geometry DVDs can be ordered with the relevant Math PACEs for added tutor
assistance. Specific information is provided in the charts below.
3. Optional non-credit Elective Courses:
The following elective courses could be considered for enrichment but will only count for credits
toward a College Entrance Certificate:
The following pages will give you the sequence of PACEs (courses) in the different subjects offered
in the FET phase for learners on the National Senior Certificate track.
1. Learners in this phase should work according to an approved Academic Projection.
2. Consult the Graduation Handbook for specifics on graduation requirements, courses of study,
certification, application for non-PACE course approval.
3. Learners who are preparing to write the National Senior Certificate examination will have to
meet the following subject requirements:
