by us<strong>in</strong>g one of his own techniques—humor.<br />

Interact<strong>in</strong>g Socializers th<strong>in</strong>k aloud<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce Interact<strong>in</strong>g Socializers like to talk more than average —to<br />

others and to themselves—they’re likely to say <strong>in</strong>appropriate th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

more oft en than most of the other types. When talkativeness and<br />

emotionality mix, then hoof-<strong>in</strong>-mouth problems may set <strong>in</strong> with<br />

this behavioral type. Learn<strong>in</strong>g when to stop talk<strong>in</strong>g and start listen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

can help Interact<strong>in</strong>g Socializers grow. Sometimes their naturally<br />

impulsive behaviors energize us; at other times their spontaneity requires<br />

more restra<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

Th ey’re idea people who throw ideas out. “Hal, we could do this (and<br />

this, or this, etc.).” Th is impulsive habit can get them <strong>in</strong> trouble. Why?<br />

Because other people may th<strong>in</strong>k a commitment has been made, but<br />

the Interact<strong>in</strong>g Socializer may not view the situation <strong>in</strong> the same way.<br />

Two weeks later, Hal may say, “Okay, I’ve done my part. When can you<br />

start action on yours?”<br />

“What part are you talk<strong>in</strong>g about? I never agreed to anyth<strong>in</strong>g, Hal. I<br />

was just th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g out loud.” In this Interact<strong>in</strong>g Socializer’s m<strong>in</strong>d, they<br />

hadn’t formed an agreement, just bra<strong>in</strong>stormed. Realistically, this type<br />

is much better at generat<strong>in</strong>g ideas than implement<strong>in</strong>g them.<br />

Fire! Fire! Fire!<br />

Interact<strong>in</strong>g Socializers can pump up their fl exibility by better controll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

their time and emotions and by develop<strong>in</strong>g a more objective<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d set. Th ey can benefi t by spend<strong>in</strong>g more time check<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

verify<strong>in</strong>g, specify<strong>in</strong>g, and organiz<strong>in</strong>g, or gett<strong>in</strong>g someone else to<br />

do it for them. Otherwise, Interact<strong>in</strong>g Socializers may succumb to<br />

their excitable Fire! Fire! Fire! tendencies. If they concentrate on the<br />
