* <strong>River</strong> was in flood at the time <strong>of</strong> the survey therefore no floating river vegetation evident during the survey.<br />
Of the ten sites surveyed six were in flood and the other four were positive for floating river<br />
vegetation. In the case <strong>of</strong> site 8 and site 9 excess rainfall was beneficial to the growth <strong>of</strong> floating<br />
river vegetation by providing mountain streams with a prolonged level <strong>of</strong> water to support aquatic<br />
growth. A simple observation <strong>of</strong> the surrounding landscape <strong>of</strong> upland bog (section 2.3), would<br />
indicate a drier than average summer season in 2006.<br />

<strong>Floating</strong> river vegetation was evident in abundance at site three. One element <strong>of</strong> each<br />
floating river vegetation group was present. Also evident was unprotected Ranunculus species and<br />
fools watercress commonly found in habitats alongside and <strong>of</strong>ten confused or mistaken for lesser<br />
water parsnip. Pondweed and starwort species were the most frequently recorded floating river<br />
