• Girdles incorrectly applied. If girdles were not applied to the<br />

correct depth so that all phloem is removed, then the vine<br />

responses could be lower. However, in this case, the research<br />

team did double check and are confi dent that girdles were<br />

applied correctly at the Whangarei sites<br />

• Root system already under stress. If roots on <strong>vines</strong> were<br />

importing less carbohydrate than normal, then the presence of<br />

a girdle could have had little effect. Although dry conditions<br />

could have resulted in limited root growth (and therefore less<br />

demand for carbohydrates) in the summer period, there dry<br />

matter levels on all the <strong>vines</strong> were relatively low, which would<br />

not suggest that they had been water stressed (see Currie et al.<br />

2007a, this issue)<br />

• Vines ‘Source limited’. If canopy photosynthesis (carbohydrate<br />

source) was already very low, then <strong>girdling</strong> may not have altered<br />

carbohydrate allocation signifi cantly<br />

• Girdles heal too fast. It is possible that if girdles have healed<br />

very quickly, there may have been insuffi cient time for fruit to<br />

accumulate extra carbohydrates<br />

• Low Potential. Low fl ower quality meant the fruit had a low<br />

potential for size and/or dry matter and this was reached even<br />

without trunk <strong>girdling</strong>.<br />

With the orchardists’ support we hope to look at these <strong>vines</strong> again<br />

in 2008 and see if these responses are consistent. This will be<br />

reported on later in the year.<br />
