Case Study - John from Larbert
John is a member of one of our groups. He found out about the
group from the job centre, where he picked up a leaflet when he
went to sign on. John came along to learn how to use a computer,
and gain more skills to improve his prospects of finding a job.
John says he thought it would be difficult joining the group for the
first time. He didn’t know what to expect, but the group was really
friendly, really welcoming, and the group doesn’t
feel like a chore – it’s a social event too, and the
other members of the group have become his
friends. John has also moved on and is now
working towards his ECDL (European Computer
Drivers Licence).
FALKIRK WEST COMMUNITY
PLANNING
We asked! You said! Now make it matter!
Services designed with and for People and Communities
In 2003 the Government placed a duty on all local Councils and their partner agencies to work
with local people as part of Community Planning Partnerships. These Partnerships were told to
develop a clear understanding of local needs and opportunities, plan for improvements and
deliver improvements and actions
Understand the Local Needs
As a starting point, statistical information about the area was gathered from a variety of sources
such as the Scottish Government, Office of National Statistics, Falkirk Council and Forth Valley
Health Board for sections of the Falkirk West area, including Bainsford, Langlees, Camelon,
Tamfourhill, Larbert, Stenhousemuir, Bonnybridge and Denny. This included health, social
economic, education, life expectancy, unemployment and receipt of benefits.
To get the views of the local people, door to door surveys have been carried out and to date
12000 households have taken part in this consultation. Thank you to everyone who has helped
us with this!
Plan for Improvements
The next step was to organise a number of events with local
officers, local groups and local residents to feed back the
results. A graphic artist captured people’s views and helped
to identify the actions to be taken forward. Networks are
now being set up in each area to help local people and
services to come together and create joined up solutions.
Deliver Improvements/Action
Following this process, a Community Action Plan will be developed
for each area that will:
• be created by the community based on their perceptions
• be informed by the local community and the skills and
knowledge from which others can learn
• be useable by all agencies
• inform and address inequalities
• target Falkirk Council services and agencies where they are
needed most
• incorporate existing policies
• be communicated through the setting up of local networks
• invest in the capacity of local people and groups so that change lasts
SPOTLIGHT ON GREENPARK
COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTRE
The Greenpark Community Centre is situated in Polmont and serves the village and surrounding
area providing a wide ranging and varied programme. The centre is open to the whole
community, both young and old, focusing on social, educational and leisure time activities. The
centre is run by a voluntary management committee supported by Falkirk Council’s Community
At present the community centre is in the later
