Eternity shut in a span.
Summer in winter, day in night,
Heaven in earth, and God in man!
Lesson 1
The Fall
Genesis 3:8-15
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day,
and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the
trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him,“Where are
you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid, because I
was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you
eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” e man said, “e woman
whom You gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” en the Lord
God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” e woman said, “e
serpent deceived me, and I ate.” e Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have
done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the eld; on your
belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity
between you and the woman, and between your ospring and her ospring; he shall
bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Let All Mortal Flesh
Text: 5th Century Hymn;
Music: Traditional French (17th Century)
Let all mortal esh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded, for, with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand.
King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood.
He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food.
Rank on rank the host of heaven streams before Him on the way,
As the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day,
at the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.
At His feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim, with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry,
“Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Lord most high!”
Lesson 2
The Coming King
Isaiah 7:14, 9:2, 6
erefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive
and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
e people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt
in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. For to us a Child is born,
to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His
name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
Welcome, Welcome, Mighty King
G. F. Handel
Welcome, welcome, mighty King!
Hail Him who salvation brings!
Welcome, David’s greater Son;
Welcome the anointed One!
Come to set His people free,
Come to rule triumphantly!
Come to save us from our sin,
Come to bring God’s Kingdom in!
Rejoice, all ye nations, rejoice, all ye people: Christ has come!
Unto to us a Child is born, and unto to us a Son is given.
e government shall be upon His shoulders;
And His Name shall be called
“Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace,”
And of His Kingdom there shall be no end!
Lesson 3
Emmanuel!
Matthew 1:18-23
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When His mother Mary had
been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child
from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling
to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these
things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph,
son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived
in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call His name
Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” All this took place to fulll
what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name
Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Lesson 4
The Birth
Luke 2:1-7
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world
should be registered. is was the rst registration when Quirinius was
governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph
also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of
David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of
David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while
they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her
rstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger,
because there was no place for them in the inn.
Babe of Bethlehem
Text: Peter Kennerley; Music: Edmund Walters
In the dead of night all the world lay sleeping in the blanket of the dark;
And the shepherds lay with their sheep on the hills beyond the town,
as they waited for the dawn.
In the starless night heaven’s windows opened, pouring light upon the earth;
Angel voices rang telling news of a Child but newly born,
with a manger for a bed.
Tremble not good men, said the angel host in silver raiment in the sky.
For the Lord is good, and He knows all the fear within your heart,
so to you He sends His Son.
Not on prince’s throne, but a tiny babe both meek and gentle doth He lie
In a stable room; there with Mary His Holy mother mild,
in the town of Bethlehem.
Shepherds rise and sing, let us go and see the blessed Child the Son of God.
Singing peace on earth and goodwill now to all who love the Lord.
Praise Him, Glory, Hallelujah!
Shall we take a gift? What can poor men oer to the Lord,
the Prince of Light?
Let us give our hearts, let us kneel there and oer all we have
to the Babe of Bethlehem.
Lesson 5
The Shepherds
Luke 2:8-12
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the eld, keeping watch over
their ock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of
the Lord shone around them, and they were lled with fear. And the angel said to
them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all
the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ
the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will nd a baby wrapped in swaddling
cloths and lying in a manger.”
Lesson 7
The Visit
Luke 2:15-20
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one
another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which
the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and
Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known
the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it
wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things,
pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising
God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
That Little Baby
Dianne Wilkinson; arr. by Cliff Duren
at little Baby, He was born of a virgin;
He was sent down to save us and to bear every burden.
He was God in the esh, so let the hallelujahs ring:
at little Baby is the King!
Once there were three wise men who were following a star,
Traveling to Bethlehem from eastern lands so far.
ey heard about a birth there, an anointed, Holy One,
Born to be Messiah, God’s only begotten Son.
at little Baby... He was born of a virgin;
Angels were descending on that bright and starry night.
Shepherds came to see that Child beneath the star so bright.
at Baby in a manger in that little Jewish town,
He’ll one day rule this universe; creation will bow down.
at little Baby... he was born of a virgin;
Go tell it on the mountain.
Over the hills and everywhere!
You’ve got to go tell it on the mountain:
at little Baby is the King!
Come and worship, come and worship!
at little Baby is the King!
And He was God in the esh, so let the hallelujahs ring.
at little Baby is the King!
Let the hallelujahs ring for Jesus!
Light of the World
Isaiah 60:1; 2 Corinthians 4:6
Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Hallelujah (Light has Come)
Alyssa, Lauren & Rebecca Barlow; arr. by Mark McClure
My Baby, heaven sent You to me.
But who am I that, here tonight,
Hallelujah! We’ve been found.
A Child is born to save us now: Jesus!
Hallelujah! Light has come, a Savior who will set us free,
e Promise for those who believe.
