Key Differences in Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer for InfiniStream Console Users Feature Description Local Capture Buffer • The InfiniStream Console connects to remote capture interfaces on multiple independent InfiniStream appliances. • Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer works with a single local Ethernet network interface. The Navigation Panel only lists the local PC – you can’t add additional remote devices. The local device is identified both by its Windows system name and the loopback IP address of 127.0.0.1. Capture • In the InfiniStream model, capture is “always on,” persistently streaming data to vast packet stores spanning multiple disks/array. • Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer captures data on demand – similar to Sniffer Portable/Global, packets are only available after you’ve started capture manually. Monitoring Statistics • In the InfiniStream model, the InfiniStream appliance tabulates RMON statistics persistently. • Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer only tabulates RMON statistics once you’ve opened the local network interface by double-clicking its entry in the Navigation Panel at the left of the Quick Select window. Once monitoring begins, new statistics are available for display in 15 second buckets – you can select a time window from the Graph Panel as you normally would. Adaptive Analysis Only available in Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer. Alerts/Alarms Not available in Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer. Key Differences in Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer for InfiniStream Console Users Feature Description Sniffer Expert Available when capturing in Raw mode instead of Adaptive mode. Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer automatically determines which capture mode you are using and displays the appropriate analysis interface when you click the Mine button to retrieve packet data from a time selection: • Adaptive Capture Mode – ASPs are analyzed in the Adaptive Session Trace Session and Decode views with drilldowns available between the two perspectives. • Raw Capture Mode – Packets are analyzed in the traditional postcapture Display window with Expert, tri-pane Decode, Matrix, Host Table, Protocol Distribution, and Statistics tabs. Trace Files • The InfiniStream Console can open Sniffer (.cap) trace files both into the Quick Select window and into the postcapture Decode window. • Sniffer Adaptive Application Analyzer only opens Sniffer trace files into the postcapture Decode window using File > Open; you can’t add them to the Navigation panel for Quick Select analysis as you can with the InfiniStream Console. However, you can also open Adaptive trace files (.asr and .asp; refer to Key Terms on page 23 for a description of these file types). User’s Guide 21
