where dynamite had been used to set up shock waves which echo back to geophones. These
vibrations can be mapped to reveal cavities in the substrata. Sometimes these cavities
contain oil or gas.
These petroliferous chimneys sometimes are only a few yards in diameter and practically
vertical. This type of formation does not respond well to seismic mapping. We scanned
thousands of acres for about three weeks. The only formation we located had already been
tapped about thirty years prior and exhausted. The explanation I offered the lease holders
was. "The oil is where we find it."
The next challenge came in the overthrust area of Wyoming outside Evanston. The
exploration site covered land outside a national park. Our environmental friendliness allows
us to explore anywhere that will allow a 4 wheeler with a spark arrester. We discouraged this
particular oil company from drilling. They took our advice, and I believe they saved a million
dollars. The other well we examined was a hole being drilled by Quazar.
The rig was already seventeen thousand feet down. This type of rig uses various weights
of drill mud to contain high pressure subterranean releases and carry the cuttings to the
surface. Drilling mud is pumped through the drill steel and is forced to the surface along the
clearance between the drill pipe and the edge of the hole. This mud is closely analyzed by
mudloggers who chart the structures and discoveries. Hydrogen Sulfide alarms set up around
the Kelly - the unit that turns the drill pipe - protect the crew from sudden exposure.
This was the first time the technology had been tested on formations that deep. We spent
one day scanning the site. We spent another day preparing a radio tomographical map of the
strata below their drill rig, Our results were compared to the mud log. Although we were not
allowed to keep a copy of the log, as it did cost the investors over a million dollars, I can tell
you that each change in formation matched perfectly. I can also tell you that the hole was dry.
This site had been selected using Landsats satellite photos of the surface of the earth which
illuminate fractures and subterranean fissures and surface gamma ray scanning. The best
guess the petroleum experts could muster was a million dollar dry hole.
Upon returning to Kentucky, I decided to incorporate gamma ray mapping into the data
collection scheme. As it turned out a 4' crystal positioned a few inches from the ground on
the four-wheeler produced timely results. Radon gas migrates up through the earth from who
knows where. It can seep through any geological structure except petroliferous zones. Like
upside down rain, radon gas migrates to the edges of these zones and then makes its way to
the surface.
These resulting halos can be detected with gamma ray mapping. The "dead zones"
indicate the presence of petroleum. The velocities of the gamma collisions with the crystal
detector are directly proportional to the porosity of the rock. This is very important to know.
All the oil pump does is clear the hole of oil that has drained into the hole. If the formations
are too tight the oil will never flow into the hole.
Even fracking, a technique of pumping high pressure sulfuric acid into the target rock
formation, cannot create enough pathways to allow oil to flow if the formation is too tight.
We collected enough data to be able to predict the porosity of the target formation before the
hole was ever drilled. Gamma ray neutron logs taken on site by Haliburton confirmed many
times our ability to predict porosity within 0.5% of their measurements.
The radio tomographical techniques that I developed are the most accurate and reliable
in the world. When the demand for hard-to-find oil or water reserves becomes high again
perhaps this technology will be valuable. As long as our country wishes to maintain its
dependence on foreign erode oil, those who make money drilling dry holes will only be
interested in using this technology as a marketing device.
When the world is ready to find oil, water, natural gas, shale, coal, or even silver - we
scanned a silver mine in Roseburg, Oregon once - this technology will be here.
