Swiss figure skater Sarah Meier (25) is a two-time European silver medallist and a seven-time Swiss champion. While preparing for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, taking place in her favourite city Vancouver, the well travelled ice skating princess tells us why she gets butterflies when flying. Art on Ice 2010 mit Sarah Meier 4.-7. Unfortunately, I cannot bring my ice skates as hand luggage since they are considered weapons. It has already happened once before when my skates did not arrive on time, during a World Championship no less. While waiting for my ice skates to arrive, I missed a few training sessions. Even though my costumes can be replaced, I carry them in my hand luggage. My ice skates are more of a problem since they are custom made. At Zurich Airport I stop at Starbucks before boarding. Making time for a cappuccino is always important. Before the flight I buy chewing gum and something to read at the kiosk. I took my first flight 23 years ago to Rhodes for summer holiday. Since I was only two years old at the time, I cannot remember much about that flight. As a child, I flew to the USA quite often. Those flights seemed to take forever. But since then I have grown to love flying. Whether I am on an aeroplane, on a roller coaster or parachuting through the air, I love feeling butterflies in my stomach from the strong jostling. When I jump on the ice, I am in the air for only a split second. Since I need to maintain tight control, I do not get that real flying sensation. I enjoy flying to Korea or Japan for ice skating events, and I prefer spending my holidays in Miami. But my favourite city is undoubtedly Vancouver. Nestled between the ocean and the mountains, Vancouver is wonderfully unique. That makes me even more excited about the Olympic Games.» Art on Ice 2010 starring Sarah Meier March 4-7, 2010 Hallenstadion Zürich www.artonice.com/www.sarahmeier.ch vip pass winter 2009/2010 45
