heir/ Malcolm le Grant, probably a descendaiit <strong>of</strong> Robert, the<br />

younger son <strong>of</strong> Gregory the Grant. Christina had married<br />

Duncan Fraser, a cadet <strong>of</strong> the house <strong>of</strong> Lovat, aftd Fraser,<br />

finding that a peaceable possession <strong>of</strong> these properties in the<br />

midst <strong>of</strong> the clan Grant and at a distance from his own chief,<br />

was not to be expected, exchanged the properties in Strathspe}'<br />

with JVIalcolm Grant for that <strong>of</strong> Stratherrick, which its vicinity<br />

to Lovat rendered the more desirable possession for a Fraser.<br />

In this manner the greater part <strong>of</strong> Strathspey remained in the<br />

possession <strong>of</strong> the chief <strong>of</strong> the Grants, while their original property<br />

went into the family <strong>of</strong> the Frasers.<br />

After Malcolm we know little <strong>of</strong> the Grants, until we find<br />

Duncan Grant de eodem at the head <strong>of</strong> the clan in the middle<br />

<strong>of</strong> the fifteenth century, and from this period the\- began gradu-<br />

ally to increase in extent <strong>of</strong> pos.sessions and <strong>of</strong> power, until<br />

they rose to be a clan <strong>of</strong> no ordinary importance.<br />

At different periods they acquired Glenmorison, Glenurchart,<br />

and man}' other estates, and continued in the ranks <strong>of</strong> the<br />

principal clans, until at length the extinction <strong>of</strong> the noble<br />

family <strong>of</strong> Finlater added the peerage <strong>of</strong> Seafield to their former<br />

possessions.<br />
