Results of 1971 Consultation
“The translations provided proved to be generally
acceptable. Nearly two thirds of the 150
respondents found the translations to be good or
excellent, and eighty per cent found them
acceptable. About eighty per cent preferred simple
translations to more elaborate ones, and two thirds
of the respondents asked that the prayers be more
contemporary in style and tone. Opinion was
evenly divided as to whether the translations should
bbe freer f or more precise. i Nearly N l all llwere agreed d
that paraphrase and moderate amplification of the
texts are acceptable, and more than eighty percent
agreed that prayers need to be concretized, concretized or that
new metaphors need to be introduced.”
