“<strong>The</strong> translations provided proved to be generally<br />
acceptable. Nearly two thirds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 150<br />
respondents found <strong>the</strong> translations to be good or<br />
excellent, and eighty per cent found <strong>the</strong>m<br />
acceptable. About eighty per cent preferred simple<br />
translations to more elaborate ones, and two thirds<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> respondents asked that <strong>the</strong> prayers be more<br />
contemporary in style and tone. Opinion was<br />
evenly divided as to whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> translations should<br />
bbe freer f or more precise. i Nearly N l all llwere agreed d<br />
that paraphrase and moderate amplification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
texts are acceptable, and more than eighty percent<br />
agreed that prayers need to be concretized, concretized or that<br />
new metaphors need to be introduced.”<br />

work which included <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
translation into vernacular<br />
languages languages, with <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />
bringing about, in <strong>the</strong> most diligent<br />
way, that renewal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sacred<br />
Lit Liturgy which hi h was one e <strong>of</strong> f <strong>the</strong><br />
foremost intentions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

texts in various localities stand in need <strong>of</strong><br />
improvement through correction or through a new<br />

existing vernacular translations – especially in <strong>the</strong><br />
case <strong>of</strong> certain languages – have impeded <strong>the</strong><br />
progress <strong>of</strong> f th <strong>the</strong> inculturation i lt ti that th t actually t ll should h ld<br />
have taken place. Consequently, <strong>the</strong> Church has<br />
been prevented from laying <strong>the</strong> foundation for a<br />
ffuller, ll healthier h l hi and dmore au<strong>the</strong>ntic h i renewal. l<br />

A rich<br />
patrimony<br />
20. <strong>The</strong> Latin liturgical texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> Rite,<br />
while drawing on centuries <strong>of</strong> ecclesial experience in<br />
transmitting <strong>the</strong> faith <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church received from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs, are <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>the</strong> fruit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liturgical<br />
renewal, just recently brought forth. In order that<br />
such a rich patrimony may be preserved and passed<br />
on through <strong>the</strong> centuries, it is to be kept in mind from<br />
<strong>the</strong> beginning that <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liturgical<br />
texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> Liturgy is not so much a work <strong>of</strong><br />
creative ti innovation i ti as it is i <strong>of</strong> f rendering d i <strong>the</strong> th original i i l<br />
texts faithfully and accurately into <strong>the</strong> vernacular<br />
language. While it is permissible to arrange <strong>the</strong><br />
wording, g, <strong>the</strong> syntax y and <strong>the</strong> style y in such a way y as to<br />
prepare a flowing vernacular text suitable to <strong>the</strong><br />
rhythm <strong>of</strong> popular prayer, <strong>the</strong> original text, ins<strong>of</strong>ar as<br />
possible, must be translated integrally and in <strong>the</strong><br />
most exact manner manner, without omissions or additions in<br />
terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir content, and without paraphrases or<br />
glosses. Any adaptation to <strong>the</strong> characteristics or <strong>the</strong><br />
nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various vernacular languages g g is to be<br />
sober and discreet.<br />

peoples recently brought to <strong>the</strong> Christian Faith,<br />
fidelity and exactness with respect to <strong>the</strong> original<br />
texts may <strong>the</strong>mselves sometimes require that<br />
words already in current usage be employed in<br />
new ways, that new words or expressions be<br />
coined, that terms in <strong>the</strong> original text be<br />
transliterated or adapted to <strong>the</strong> pronunciation <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> vernacular language, or that figures <strong>of</strong> speech<br />
be used which convey in an integral manner <strong>the</strong><br />
content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Latin expression even while being<br />
verbally or syntactically different from it. Such<br />
measures, especially those <strong>of</strong> greater moment, are<br />
to be submitted to <strong>the</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
Bishops involved before being inserted into <strong>the</strong><br />
definitive draft. In particular, caution should be<br />
exercised in introducing words drawn from non- non<br />
Christian religions.<br />

25. So that <strong>the</strong> content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original texts may be<br />
evident and comprehensible even to <strong>the</strong> faithful<br />
who lack any special intellectual formation, <strong>the</strong><br />
translations should be characterized by a kind <strong>of</strong><br />
language which is easily understandable, yet<br />
which at <strong>the</strong> same time preserves <strong>the</strong>se texts’<br />
dignity dignity, beauty beauty, and doctrinal precision precision. By means<br />
<strong>of</strong> words <strong>of</strong> praise and adoration that foster<br />
reverence and gratitude in <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> God’s<br />
majesty majesty, his power power, his mercy and his<br />
transcendent nature, <strong>the</strong> translations will respond<br />
to <strong>the</strong> hunger and thirst for <strong>the</strong> living God that is<br />
experienced p by y <strong>the</strong> ppeople p <strong>of</strong> our own time, , while<br />
contributing also to <strong>the</strong> dignity and beauty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
liturgical celebration itself. 19

<strong>The</strong> Orations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> Rite<br />
32. Such characteristics are <strong>of</strong>ten seen in <strong>the</strong> language <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> Rite, but especially<br />
in <strong>the</strong> orations “which exhibit a capacity to transcend <strong>the</strong> limits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir original<br />
situations so as to become <strong>the</strong> prayers <strong>of</strong> Christians in any time or place place” . In <strong>the</strong><br />
orations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> Rite, and principally in <strong>the</strong> collects, can be seen a pattern<br />
recognizable from pagan antiquity (without denying some biblical parallels):<br />
<strong>the</strong> address to God;<br />
a relative clause <strong>of</strong> description, joined to <strong>the</strong> address;<br />
a petition<br />
a fuller description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> petition or an expression <strong>of</strong> its motivation, motivation<br />
a devout closure, expressing hope <strong>of</strong> divine action.<br />
Each element is meant to flow from <strong>the</strong> previous one, so that most orations are<br />
comprised <strong>of</strong> a single Latin sentence whose syntax allows each part clear expression,<br />
but carefully subordinates all <strong>of</strong> its elements to a reliance upon God. <strong>The</strong>se ancient<br />
orations are <strong>of</strong>ten complex, p but with a unity ywhich derives from <strong>the</strong> thought g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
speaker. In <strong>the</strong>se and o<strong>the</strong>r ways, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> tendency to use “extended subordination”<br />
is clearly evident to <strong>the</strong> translator <strong>of</strong> liturgical texts.<br />

Single-Sentence Single Sentence Prayers<br />
54. As mentioned above, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> Rite’s use <strong>of</strong> a single g sentence<br />
form for many <strong>of</strong> its prayers seems to have been adopted from pre-<br />
Christian <strong>Roman</strong> prayers in which extended subordination serves to<br />
order all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sentence to express a dependence upon<br />
God as <strong>the</strong> source and end <strong>of</strong> all saving action. Extended<br />
subordination in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> single sentence prayer helps to emphasize<br />
what is important by clearly labeling what is secondary or subordinate<br />
to a main thought. Typically, Latin signals this by <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />
conjunctives, as well as historic, causal or successive sequence with ut<br />
or cum, all in an effort to underline <strong>the</strong> subordination <strong>of</strong> such<br />
expressions to <strong>the</strong> principal thought <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> speaker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prayer. In<br />
addition, such clauses are fur<strong>the</strong>r subordinated through a sequence <strong>of</strong><br />
tenses which links all action to that solely <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main clause, with<br />
every phrase dominated <strong>of</strong>ten by <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> a single governing verb.<br />
