ATHLETIC FACILITIES AT THE MOUNT
The Mount provides its students with athletic fields and the
Harrington Center, a modern two-level student union with a
running track, gym, fitness center, and food court. During the
2003-2004 academic year, the Mount began its Campus Expansion
Plan, which includes athletic fields to accommodate more Mount
teams on campus for practice and home games.
The Mount’s East Fields on Delhi Road, which have been the
home field for women’s soccer, have been expanded into a game
field and running track with seating for up to 2,400 spectators. The
new Sports Complex gives the Mount Lions’ football team its first
home field on campus since 1990. It also provides a home field for
women’s soccer, men’s soccer and lacrosse teams for men (2007)
and women (2009). The track serves the Mount’s track & field
teams and additional facilities house the Mount’s academic program
in athletic training, as well as locker rooms and concessions. The
Campus Expansion Plan also included the renovation of nearby
College property into practice fields. The Lions’ softball team began
playing home games at the new River Road softball field in 2007.
MOUNT ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
Steve Radcliffe
Steve Radcliffe enters his 13th year as the
Lions’ athletic director for the 2007-2008
school year, and he looks forward to another
outstanding season of athletics at the Mount.
The Lions’ volleyball team captured the
HCAC Championship this past fall and
advanced to the Conference Championship
game. The Mount football team finished as
runner-ups in the HCAC regular season and
qualified to their fourth straight NCAA Division III playoffs.
Women’s soccer also advanced to the HCAC Semifinals while the
men’s soccer team enjoyed their best season to date.
In addition, there were plenty of other highlights, both
individually and team-wise, for the Mount’s athletic programs this
past fall.
Radcliffe has long been a part of the sports programs at
the Mount. A retired athletic trainer, Radcliffe began his athletic
training career in 1976 and was hired to implement the Mount’s
first academic program for athletic training in 1989. In addition,
Radcliffe has been the Lions’ head athletic trainer, working with
athletes from all the intercollegiate sports, as well as teaching
athletic training at the College.
Radcliffe, who received his bachelor’s degree in 1978 and his
master’s in physical education in 1981 from Miami University
(Ohio), became the Mount’s athletic director in 1995. Upon entering
the position, Radcliffe stressed the importance of upholding the
College’s stellar reputation of academics and athletics as a positive
influence in student life and development at the Mount.
Steve and his wife, Darlene, have two children, Victoria and
Michael. The Radcliffes live in Delhi.

COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
2008 OUTLOOK
The Lions are coming off two straight season’s of sub .500 results
and missed making the conference tournament last season. Head
Coach Beth Goderwis and her team plan to improve their run
production this fall and overcome the graduation loss of a senior
pitching leader in order to turn things around this coming season.
The Mount averaged only 3.8 runs scored per game last season
and saw their team batting average slip to .252. Despite that, the
Lions were in the hunt down the stretch for fourth place in the
HCAC regular season standings, a spot that would have qualified
them to the HCAC Tournament. The Mount would end up
finishing seventh in the conference standings, with a 7-9 record,
and a 13-23 overall mark. Outfielder Erin Brogan and pitcher
Sheena Hundley graduated in the spring of 2007 for the Lions.
Brogan returns to the Lions this season as an assistant coach,
along with Jessica Hartley.
“My biggest concern last season was that we didn’t score enough
runs,’’ Goderwis states. “Part of it was that we didn’t have a lot of
hits and the hits we did have, we didn’t get a lot with runners in
scoring position. We need to get better from an offensive standpoint
and our team batting average needs to be over .300.”
Last season the Lions allowed only 158 runs (4.4 per game) and
had a team earned run average of 2.85. Opponents batted .296
against the Mount in 2007.
In addition to finishing the season with a winning record,
Goderwis and her team would like to get into the conference
tournament, win the HCAC Tournament (which would qualify
them to the NCAA Tournament) and win at least one game in
the NCAA postseason, something they have never done in the
program’s history.
8
Mount catcher Randi Yaeger in 2007 action.
Goderwis said she’s looking for her team to increase their power
production as they totaled 33 doubles, five triples and five home
runs among their 137 hits in 2007. A solid group of returners, and
some newcomers, could improve those numbers this season. Those
same players will be counted on to provide a strong defense for the
Lions, most notably in the outfield.
All-Conference catcher Randi Yaeger, a junior captain, gives the
team solid skills on both defense and at the plate. She led the team’s
full-time players in batting average and was second in RBI last
season. Providing depth at the catching position is freshman Rachel
Yarman. The starting first base position could be handled by any of
these three players, junior Megan Helvey, senior Katie Cammerer
and freshman Megan McCullough. Second base is also another wide
open position for a starter, among sophomore Staci Hazenfeld; and
freshmen Ella Frede, Brittany Sparks, Abby LaRosa and McCullough.
Junior Kristina Dennett, McCullough or Frede will also compete for
the starting shortstop position. Team RBI leader Casey Downey, a
sophomore, is expected to start at third base and will be backed up
by LaRosa.
Goderwis is happy with the look of the team’s outfield, with
returning starters Rae Glassmeyer, a junior captain, returns in left
field while sophomore Casey Waldman returns to right field. Senior
Ashleigh Stallkamp has been moved from shortstop to center field
this season. Among others that may see time in the outfield this
season are junior Jessica Meinking and freshman Sara Rutschilling.
Cammerer is also expected to compete for the starting designated
player position this spring. Senior Tessa Diersing should anchor the
team’s pitching staff in 2007 but three freshmen pitchers Katie
Lawrence, Katie Cohill and Casey Brookbank will compete for
innings, too. Those three freshmen pitchers might also see time in
the batting order or at other positions in the field.
“I think we added a little more power with McCullough and I
feel that Waldman, Yaeger, Stallkamp, and Downey can increase
their power output, too,” Goderwis says. “I think our batting order
will be strong, especially 3-4-5. We have eight freshmen on the team
and a few spots open for starters that we’ll need to get settled on.
Also, our pitching staff will be young but I think we have some
talented players, there, also.”
Goderwis said she is looking forward to the 2008 season and will
see her team tested early in the spring. The Mount recorded a 3-5
mark in Florida last season, but lost two closely played games during
that stretch to nationally-ranked teams. After returning home, the
Mount was not able to play for 11 days due to inclement weather.
This season’s Florida spring break games include taking on four
teams with winning records in 2007 (out of eight opponents).
Other strong 2008 HCAC foes on the schedule, besides the
conference teams, are Centre, Wittenberg and Kenyon.
“The layoff hurt us last season,’’ said Goderwis of the early season
woes in 2007. “We couldn’t get outside to do anything. I think
though, this season, if we can figure out how to put it all together
we can win against anyone.”
Goderwis said the team came to practice this preseason in better
shape overall than they had in the past. She feels her team has better
overall speed this season and the personnel that will give her better
flexibility in both the field and at the plate.
“We were chosen for sixth in the HCAC Coaches Preseason Poll
but it could be an interesting year,’’ Goderwis said. “Our players are
excited about the season and we’re ready to get going.”

COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
MOUNT IN THE HCAC
The College of Mount St. Joseph Lions head into their ninth season
as a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Other
conference members include: Anderson University, Bluffton College,
Defiance College, Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester
College, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Transylvania
University.
In 1999, the Lions ended their season fourth in the HCAC
regular season standings. They also placed third in the HCAC
Tournament. The team placed in the top three in batting average
(.325), slugging percentage (.404), and ERA (2.50). April King,
Anita Murphy and Cari Stroub were named to the All-Conference
Team in 1999.
In 2000 the Mount placed fifth in the HCAC regular season.
The team was third in runs scored with 74 runs. The Lions also tied
for second place in doubles (22) and triples (5). The Lions were
eliminated in the first round of the HCAC Tournament. Following
the season, Stephanie Schram and Angela Von Gries were named to
the All-Conference Team.
2001 brought about a great year for the Lions as they tied for
second place, 7-5, in the HCAC regular season (along with
Anderson and Bluffton). The Lions advanced to the finals of the
HCAC Tournament, but lost to the eventual champion Manchester,
2-1 and 4-0 (championship game). Christy Stath was awarded
HCAC Most Valuable Player and all-conference. Schram and Von
Gries were once again named to the All-Conference Team. Stath
and Von Gries were also named Players of the Week during the
season. The Lions led the conference in doubles (19).
The Lions’ success continued to build in 2002, as they captured
second place behind Transylvania University in the regular season
standings. Advancing to the HCAC Tournament finals with wins
over Manchester and Defiance, the Lions beat Anderson in two
games, capturing their first ever HCAC Championship title. With
that win, the Mount earned a bid in the NCAA III Regional
Tournament. Senior Julie Wise was named Most Valuable Player in
the conference, and freshman Kati Stroub earned the Freshman of
the Year award. Joining them on the All-Conference team were
seniors Christy Stath and Stephanie Schram. The 2003 season
marked the third straight season that the Mount claimed second
place in the HCAC. The Lions repeated as HCAC Tournament
Champions, sweeping through the tournament undefeated,
including a championship win against Defiance College. Kati
Stroub tossed a 1-0 no-hitter against Anderson in the tournament.
The Lions once again advanced to the NCAA III Regional
Tournament. Stroub, Carrie Higgins and Annie Neumann were
selected all-conference while Erin Mallory gained HCAC Player of
the Week honors. Jacqueline Gering, Lori Gray, Sondra Roberto,
and Neumann were named academic all-conference.
The Mount got off to a fast start in conference play in 2004,
sweeping Anderson in a doubleheader to open HCAC action, they
then dropped three straight, including a doubleheader at Franklin
College. After sweeping Manchester College, the Mount stood at
6-4 in the HCAC. They finished their conference schedule by
splitting doubleheaders against Transylvania University and Hanover
College. The Lions, picked for second in the Preseason Coaches’
Poll, finished tied for third with Franklin and captured the fourth
seed for the HCAC Tournament. They dropped their first game in
the HCAC Tournament but rebounded to win three straight to
advance to the championship game where they were defeated by
Defiance College, 6-5 in 10 innings. Kati Stroub, Annie Neumann
and Carrie Higgins were named All-Conference and Megan Vincent
received an HCAC Player of the Week award. Jennifer Esterman,
Jackie Gering, Amy Sunderman, and Neumann each received
Academic All-Conference recognition.
The 2005 season was yet another winning year for the Lions.
With 18 wins and 14 losses, the Mount finished third in the HCAC,
with 10 conference victories. The Lions season ended with two early
losses in the HCAC Tournament to Defiance College, 11-9 and
Bluffton College, 7-1. Leading the way for the Lions was senior
outfielder Annie Neumann, senior third baseman Carrie Higgins
and junior outfielder Amy Sunderman. All three were voted to the
HCAC All-Conference Team. Neumann, Sunderman and Katie
Stroub also took home HCAC Player of the Week Honors, in three
consecutive weeks.
In 2006, the Lions finished with an overall record of 17-24, but
they came in fourth in the conference with a 7-7 mark. They went
on to win three games in the HCAC Tournament, en route to the
conference semi-finals, where their season ended against Anderson
University. Leading the way for the Lions during the conference
schedule was senior catcher Alicia Johnson, who earned a spot on
the HCAC All-Conference Team. Johnson batted .318 and started
37 games. Senior pitcher Jennifer Esterman picked up an HCAC
Player of the Week award during the season.
The Lions slipped to seventh in the HCAC standings in 2007
with a 7-9 mark, missing out on making the HCAC Tournament.
There were, however, some solid performances turned in by Mount
players. In conference games only, the Mount finished first in
innings pitched, first in runners picked off, tied for second in stolen
bases, third in fielding percentage, and fourth in ERA. Erin Brogan
was first in the conference in stolen bases while Randi Yaeger was
second in doubles. Yaeger was the team’s lone representative on the
All-Conference team while Sheena Hundley, Casey Downey and
Brogan picked up HCAC Player of the Week honors during the
season.

are invited to consider this special opportunity. It’s a great way to show your
