Virtuelle Schule Österreich: http://www.virtuelleschule.at
The Austrian VIRTUAL SCHOOL
The Network for Innovation in Schools in Austria
ViS.AT
www.virtuelleschule.at
Origins
As an intermediary (interface) between Austria and the European Schoolnet (EUN), the
pages of the Virtual School (bm:ukk dept. V/3) were set up on a national level initially to
present on the Internet an overview of the Austrian educational contribution and ICT
projects in 1997.
ViS:AT is divided into the following areas:
National subject orientated portals and ICT projects
• The portal provides subject orientated educational information for teachers in schools
• Each portal is led by a specialist teacher of the subject or school type
• The portal heads are responsible for the content and didactical quality of the information
• The websites of the individual departments are integrated into the Austrian Educational Servers:
- eduhi – Education Highway Upper Austria: http://www.schule.at/gegenstand
- Tibs – Tiroler Bildungsserver / Education Server Tyrol: http://www.contake.at
- Bildungsportal: http://bildungspool.bildung.at
- eTeaching Austria (Services für Laptopklassen): http://www.e-teaching-austria.at
The subject related portals refer to the edict “ Electronic Content for Austrian Schools -
Creation, Distribution and Maintenance“ from July 2003-2006 and to the e-Content
initiative of the Ministry of Education.
Special projects
In special projects, teachers and students, together with specialists from different institutions,
can create or adapt multimedia and interactive learning material for use in schools and open
learning environments, for example Robotics -„First Lego League“, MigrantInnen, Mobile
Classroom, Virtual School for children, ...
”IT-Einsatz im Unterricht – Film”: These films show how to use Notebooks in different
subjects. Lessons were filmed for documentary reasons to demonstrate possible fields of IT
applications in the classroom. (http://www.virtuelleschule.at/film)
ViS:AT wants to encourage projects about the impact of ICT on society, culture and
educational policy.
Cooperations
ViS:AT supports international ICT initiatives with activities at national level
and actively cooperates on diverse projects, for example:
• European Schoolnet: http://www.eun.org
• eSchola (2001 – 2003); The main objective of eSchola was to identify examples of good
practice and promote the innovative use of new technologies on all levels of school
education. http://eschola.eduhi.at
• Valnet – Lab of Tomorrow: Lab of Tomorrow develops the pedagogical framework for
the successful application of emerging technologies in teaching science. http://www.virtuellschule.at/lot
• European Netdays (since 1997): projects and events about the aspects of creativity, ICT
and young people http://www.netdays.at
ViS:AT also helps teachers in applying for EU funding for ICT activities.
Business cooperation
Interested companies are offered the possibilty to cooperate with
educational organisations:
• Exchange of experience and information in order to integrate ICT into everyday
school life.
• Development of eLearning examples including practical use in class.
Presentation events
• Interpädagogica - Educational fair for teachers (Graz, Salzburg, Wien, Linz)
ViS:AT supports and organises the bm:ukk booth as well as numerous project presentations.
• BildungOnline, Hall in Tirol: yearly educational fair: ViS:AT organises and supports
school groups with their project presentations. http://www.bildungonline.at
• Netdays Austria – Festival: Workshops, Competitions for young people, students and
teachers. http://www.netdays.at
• eLearning Conference: Eisenstadt, yearly educational conference
http://www.virtuelleschule.at/elearning-conference
Outlook and further development of ViS:AT
• ViS:AT is a center for cross-country and interdisciplinary IT projects by
disseminating respective information about EU initiatives and possible cooperation
partners.
• ViS:AT furthermore contributes to the e-content development and classification and takes
an active role in the development of the Austrian educational content pool.
• ViS:AT aims at presenting examples of useful IT applications in education and
initiates and enables projects with a thematic focus. These projects are designed to show
how interdisciplinary teaching with the use of ICT can be implemented in class as well as in open
learning environments.
