Mutual Aid Needed To Battle
Londonderry House Fire
A ranch style house was totally
destroyed in a 2 alarm house fire in
Londonderry on December 27th.
Londonderry crews responded to the 55
Spring Road scene just after 09:00. On
their arrival they found the home fully
involved and requested a working fire with
additional tankers. The home was located
at the end of a dirt road backing up to
Route 93. Londonderry Fire received the
first call reporting the fire from a motorist
passing by on the highway.
Dispatcher Morton received a call from
Londonderry Fire at 09:08 requesting an
engine to cover Station 2. Engine 2 with a
crew of Captain Morin and Firefighters
Provencal, Sliver, Morin and Rice
responded. A short time later Ambulance 2
with a crew of Firefighters Lambert and
Bavaro were called to the scene to standby.
At 09:31 Londonderry command
requested an additional engine to the fire
and Engine 2 responded to the scene along
with Deputy Buxton in Car 3. Mutual aid
companies responding to the scene were
delayed when they responded to the wrong
section of Spring Road which is separated
into two sections by a wooded area.
A portable pump was set up to draft
from a small brook running near the scene.
A tanker shuttle was set up along with
Engine 2’s pump standing by for water
supply. Engine 2’s crew assisted battling
the fire. They were assigned to a 2 1/2 line
in the front of the building. Deputy Buxton
was assigned as the Safety Officer.
Ambulance 2 was assigned as the medical
sector.
With the building fully involved and the
roof and first floor had collapsed a
defensive attack was made. Once the
heavy fire was contained 1 3/4 lines were
used to overhaul the building.
With the building collapsed on it’s self
chains saws were used to cut openings in
the exterior walls to get at the many hot
spots burning under the debris. Crews
made no headway knocking down the
hotspots and crews were pulled back until
a excavator could be requested to the scene
to pull the building apart to reach flames
still burning within the collapsed home.
Additional companies were requested to
the scene for water supply. Companies
from Londonderry, Hudson, Derry,
Windham, Litchfield, Pelham and Auburn
worked at the scene.
Engine 2 returned to town at 11:15 with
Ambulance 2 remaining on the scene for
some time returning at 13:47
