Make a Difference!
The Library will be participating in a food drive in
September for National Hunger Action Month. We will be
forgiving fines if people will donate canned or dried food
to the Huntington Area Food Bank. Many of our area
organizations do a food drive around Thanksgiving and
Christmas, but with all the unusual weather we have had
and the power outage the Food Bank is in need of food
now. Therefore, we will offer to forgive fines during the
month of September. However, books must be returned
before the fines will be forgiven.
Also, I am happy to announce that the Cabell County
Board of Education and the Library
are working together to improve
library service to the Lesage area of
the county. The Board is providing a
temporary facility for the library while
the library constructs a new facility
to serve that area of the county in
addition to serving the Cox Landing
Elementary School. We are so excited
to be able to have buildings in all
areas of the county that will be able to
serve the needs of each community.
We will probably be building a new
library much like the one at Salt Rock.
Thank you Board of Education for
working with us to make this possible.
When I looked at the circulation figures for Cabell County
Public Library for the month of July, almost every branch
had increased circulation compared to July of last year.
All together the libraries have increased over 7 percent
in circulation from last year!! Whoever says that libraries
are dead has not been to the Cabell County Public Library
because we are alive and well! One of the most popular
new services is the downloadable books. I understand
that Overdrive (our e-book provider) is making some
changes that will make downloading books much easier
to accomplish than what we have now. This new smoother
system will be available to our patrons sometime this fall.
Please watch for the change because I do believe that you
will be happy with the easier to use downloads.
Let us hear from you about how we might make the Library
better. We are always happy to hear suggestions.
jrule@cabell.lib.wv.us
Election Day is Coming!
Well, fall is here and so are the political ads. Yes, it will
soon be Election Day. Voting is a right in this country, but
it is also a responsibility. I like to think that a public library
is a “right” of the people of a community, but I also think
that it should be a “responsibility” for the community to
help support that library.
That is what the Friends of the Library do. We raise
money for the Cabell County Public Library three ways:
membership dues, donations and memorials, and three
book sales a year. The money is then spent to support
the library’s mission, its programming, and
its staff.
Our June book sale brought in $2,615
to add to the coffers. Our next book sale
will be in October. A special sale for
“members only” will be held on Monday,
October 1 st from 10:00 a. m. to 12:00 p.m.
Please note that our October sale will only
be for two days, Friday, October 5 th and
Saturday, October 6 th . It will still be from
10:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the 4 th floor of the
Cabell County Public Library. This will help
you stock up on reading material for the
coming winter months at really low prices
and support your local public library at the
same time. What a deal!
We are always looking for new members to the group,
so if you have family or friends who are not members of
the Friends, please pass on the membership form in this
issue of the Connection so they can join us in helping the
library.
Summer is over and so is the Summer Reading Program
for children that the library does every year. The Friends
are very pleased to be able to financially support this
worthwhile effort. Kids today need to be encouraged to
read and especially during the summer holidays when
school is out, and our fantastic staff at the main library
and all of its branches does such a wonderful job in doing
that. I am proud to be a part of supporting this staff in the
work that they do. We are very fortunate in Cabell County
to be served by these talented and devoted people.
So, in closing, don’t forget to exercise your right to vote,
and also your “right” to support your public library. The
whole community benefits from what we are doing.
Pamela Ford, President
Friends of the Cabell County Public Library

White House 101
Facts and Fun for All Ages.
Did you know that William Howard Taft is the only
President who served as both President and Chief
Justice of the United States?
President John F. Kennedy won a Pulitzer Prize in 1957
for his collection of essays, “Profiles in Courage.”
Both George Washington and Jimmy Carter were
farmers before they became president – President
Washington was a planter and a farmer at his home
in Mount Vernon, and before he was President,
Jimmy Carter ran his family’s peanut farm in Plains,
Georgia.
Before he became president, Barack Obama was
a U.S. Senator. Before that, he was an Illinois
State Senator, and before that he was a community
organizer in Chicago.
The President’s personal office is called the oval
office. Any plane he flies on is called Air Force One,
and any helicopter is called Marine One.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship resulting
from the diplomatic relationship between the United
States and France.
President Lincoln owned only one home during his
lifetime – in Springfield, Ill.
President Jefferson spent more than 40 years
designing and building his home in Charlottesville, VA
known as Monticello. The President admired classical
architecture and incorporated this style into his home.
In 1915, Woodrow Wilson became the first President
to attend the World Series, where he and his fiance,
Edith Gault, made their first public appearance since
announcing their engagement. The President insisted
on paying for his own tickets.
College How-To Seminar at the Main Library
Wednesday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m.
After spending 30 years in higher education, Carole Garrison, a recently retired tenured professor at Eastern Kentucky
University, will return to the Cabell County Public Library to talk about making college decisions that make sense financially.
The seminar is most appropriate for parents and students in their junior and senior years. “College is essential. You have to
have it,” says Garrison.
However, there are some things parents and students need to know before choosing a college such as:
• What college rankings really mean
• Three common myths about what is a good, better, best college education
• How to assess your child’s educational readiness
• The one thing that can radically change your college selection process
• The steps you and your child should take to ensure the degree is affordable
This seminar will provide the information parents need to help their child make the best choice possible. It will also better
prepare parents to help their child succeed, regardless of career path or financial status.
Dr. Garrison spoke on this subject at the library in June and was asked to do it again on Wednesday, September 12 th at 6:00 p.m.
The Freedom of Expression
The right to express oneself is guaranteed by the 1 st
amendment with the freedom of speech. Authors express
themselves through their writing from historical research
to a novel with vampires and werewolves. Their words
allow them to portray feelings through writing tools such
as symmetry and metaphor. However, part of expressing
yourself is being heard. To help authors, the library takes
on the role as the holding place and distributor.
Even if you are not a writer you can still make your opinion
heard. One way everyone can express themselves is
through getting out and voting. It does not matter if you
are a democrat, republican, libertarian, independent,
etc… The most important thing is you still all have a right
to vote. It takes ten minutes at most, but it has a lasting
impression on the direction of our country.
However, voting is an important responsibility. You need to
find the candidate that will fight for what you believe. For
information on the candidates, go to your local library.
Free Fine Week!
November 11 th - 17 th
THE LIBRARY IS CLOSED
All Cabell County Public Libraries will be closed Sunday, September 2 nd
and Monday, September 3 rd in observance of Labor Day, November 9 th for
staff training, and Thursday, November 22 nd for Thanksgiving.
