Health and Safety
Should there be a policy to
exclude sick children?
It is highly recommended that
children with infectious diseases be
excluded from attending a crèche to
reduce the risk of cross-infection to
other children and staff. Sick children
need the comfort of one-to-one care,
which is unlikely to be provided in
the crèche setting.
The crèche supervisor should
ensure that information about
infectious diseases contracted by
children or staff is passed on to
all parents as soon as possible.
Refer to Department of Health
“Communicable Disease Guidelines”
booklet www.public.health.wa.gov.au
What about first aid
training?
Considerations
It is a requirement for all crèche
services that at least one staff
member on duty has a current
approved first aid certificate.
There are many organisations that provide first aid
training. The Child Care Licensing and Standards
Unit can provide advice on approved providers and
courses. See www.communities.wa.gov.au/childcare
First aid kit
A first aid kit should be in a child-proof cabinet
and easily accessible to crèche staff. The kit should
be properly maintained to ensure that at least the
following items are included:
• triangular bandage
• crepe bandage
• adequate variety of sterile dressings
• resuscitation face shield
• notebook and pencil
• scissors
• disposable gloves.
Check expiry dates on first aid items and replace
when necessary. Advice should be sought from an
approved first aid training provider.
