A new Gallup poll on
Monday reported the average
age at which Americans
can expect to retire
has been steadily creeping
up since the mid-1990s
and is now at age 67, a significant
increase as in 1996
people expected to retire
at 60. The major culprit is
money, the poll found,
since most persons who
are not retired don’t think
they’ll have enough cash
to live comfortably in retirement.
With two space shuttles
in place, NASA said
on Monday it had only
two more to go before all
four remaining spacecrafts
would be on display in retirement
homes. One
week ago, Discovery was
delivered to the Smithsonian
in Washington DC,
and on Friday, Enterprise
set down in New York
City; Endeavour, the
youngest, will find a resting
place in Los Angeles,
while Atlantis will remain
at the Kennedy Space
Center in Florida, about a
mile away from the launch
pads.
The New York Times
said on Monday that mu-
sician Bob Dylan would
receive the Presidential
Medal of Freedom, the
highest civilian honor in
the U.S., following his
2009 National Medal of
An Australian billionaire
said on Monday that
he intends to build a hightech
replica of the Titanic
at a Chinese shipyard and
launch it on its maiden
voyage in 2016 from London
to New York City, just
like its namesake planned
a century ago. Clive
Palmer announced he had
signed a memorandum of
understanding with stateowned
company CSC Junling
Shipyard to build the
“Titanic II.”
Penn State University
scientists announced on
Monday 24 new species of
“skinks,” or lizards, had
been found and named in
the Caribbean islands.
The newbies could be
close to extinction or
threatened, the researchers
said.
Speaking of extinction,
Tusk Trust, a Londonbased
charity, said on
Monday that up to 35,000
elephants were killed in
2011, slaughtered only for
their tusks. Chief executive
Charlie Mayhew said
in the past 18 months
there was a “significant increase”
in poaching of
both rhinos for the horn
and the elephant for ivory,
both fueled by an increase
in demand from consumers
in the Far East.
Speaking of removing
things, a recently dumped
Polish dentist got revenge
on her former boyfriend
by taking out all of his
teeth after agreeing to
treat a toothache. The 34year-old
Anna Mackowiak
gave 45-year-old Marek
Olszewshi a massive dose
of knockout juice and
took out every single
tooth in Olszewski’s head,
an act that also chased off
his current girlfriend.
Mackowiak faces three
years in jail for the “medical
malpractice.”
And German authorities
nailed a burglar behind
a $650,000 crime
spree after identifying the
man by his earprints.
That’s right, bucko,
earprints. The 33-year-old
suspect left behind the
telltale marks after putting
his ears to doors and windows
in order to find out
whether anyone was home
before raiding the properties,
linking his activities
to at least 96 break-ins between
July 2009 and July
2011. Earprints, by the
way, are as unique as fingerprints.
Page 12 - The BUZZ
Keeton
(Continued from pg 1)
on Highway 411 North as
she weaved her car in and
out of traffic. Once
stopped, Keeton admitted
to drinking three or four
beers.
Failing sobriety testing,
Keeton submitted to a
breath test, blowing a .14
percent blood alcohol
content, .06 percent
above the legal limit.
During a jail search,
blue pills identified as diazepam
fell from her pants
pocket, Yates said.
In other alcohol-related
incidents:
Madisonville Police Patrol
Officer David Wear
charged Casey R. Watson,
24, of Gudger Road with
DUI on April 23, following
an April 12 traffic stop in
Madisonville in which
Watson was found with a
white residue about his
nostrils and admitting to
crushing hydrocodone and
snorting the substance.
On Saturday, Wear
charged Bryan L. Fouts,
26, of Englewood Road
with public intoxication
after finding him asleep on
the ground outside an
apartment where he had
earlier and allegedly
caused a disturbance.
Also on Saturday,
Madisonville Police Sergeant
Chris Wilburn
charged Kendra S. Wilson
with public intoxication
after she was found walking
and exuding the odor
of alcohol.
And on Sunday, Tellico
Plains Police Patrol Officer
Blake Hall charged
Donna Payne, 51, of Bank
Street with public intoxication
following an altercation
with family
members. She was additionally
charged with domestic
assault and
disorderly conduct.
Barn
(Continued from pg 1)
Francis learned the
barn was leased and when
he spoke with the lessee,
the man told him he had
property inside, including
300 square hay bales
worth $900, a King Cutter
tiller valued at $1,100, a
shank plow worth $500,
three 16-foot gates valued
at $360, and one 14-foot
gate worth $120.
All items were destroyed,
Francis said.
There are no suspects
at this time, he added.
In early April, a barn on
Steer Creek Road burned,
an incident believed to be
arson.
