(Continued from pg 1)
of Representatives passed
House Bill 3872 today,”
county attorney Jerome
Melson told the BUZZ
Thursday afternoon. “The
Speaker of the House has
just signed it.”
For the record, HB3872
is the local resolution
passed on February 29 by
the Monroe County Commission
and placed before
the state General Assembly,
requesting the amendment
of the county
charter to increase the
school districts from three
to four and to decrease the
number of school board
members from nine to
eight, with two members
per district.
HB3872’s companion,
Senate Bill 3801, or
SB3801, sailed through the
Senate on April 4. Representative
Jimmy Matlock
sponsored the house bill;
Senator Randy McNally
sponsored the senate version.
Melson said that with
the Nashville legislative
approval, the bill would be
returning to Monroe
County for one final step
before the four-district
concept would become a
county directive. That
step, he said, would require
a two-thirds county
commission majority ratification
vote.
“And there should be
plenty of time for that before
the August school
board election,” he added.
“And I expect no problem
with the majority ratification.”
Melson also said he had
contacted the county
clerk’s office in
Madisonville earlier in the
day and told the clerk to
place him on the county
commission’s agenda for
this coming Tuesday
night’s regular monthly
meeting.
“The bill may be back
in time for the meeting, or
it may not,” Melson said.
“But it doesn’t matter. If
the commission doesn’t
get to it this month, the
commissioners can address
it next month.”
The BUZZ then informed
Melson that the
WE OFFER
TOP DOLLAR
AND
PAY CASH
IMMEDIATELY
April 20, 2012
Monroe County Election
Commission had superseded
the return of the bill
and with a short but unanimous
vote abolished the
Fourth District Tuesday
night, booting the concept
of four school board districts
and sent it packing,
and then had turned and
certified the three original
districts and the candidates
therein.
“Why?” Melson asked
the BUZZ.
“Because we reckon the
election administrator,
Mr. James Brown, said the
time limit for the bill to be
returned to the county
had expired and the
Fourth District was no
more. He got five rapid
nods of agreement from
his commissioners.”
“I don’t believe that is a
correct procedure,” Melson
said. “I am not aware
of a deadline that has been
transgressed. The bill has
passed the General Assembly.
I don’t think the
local election commission
has the power to overrule
the state House and Senate.”
Melson went on to explain
the legislature had
found nothing amiss in the
resolution and had passed
it unanimously - the Senate
by a 32-0 vote, the
House by a 99-0 vote –
and there was no mention
or discussion of a cutoff
date.
“There’s nothing here
regarding the bill that
would interfere with the
ability of the election
commission to go forward
very special visitors on
April 16. Several members
of the Sweetwater High
the school board’s
were applauded not only
by a deluge of family and
alone, it had over 200 participants,
from the 7th
The 2012 competition
was comprised of three
league baseball’s infamous
1983 pine-tar baseball bat
incident, Robert Pedigo
hooked a world record
427.9-pound yellowfin
tuna one week ago off the
coast of Puerto Vallaria,
Mexico, but was denied
his place in the record
books because a deck
hand touched Pedigo’s
pole during a 30-minute
battle between fish and
man. The rules say you
can’t have any help landing
a fish if you want to make
history. (The pine tar
thing? Yankees manager
Billy Martin ratted out
George Brett of the
Kansas City Royals for
having pine tar smeared
too far up the barrel of his
bat.)
Food Check-Out Week: You Can Stretch
Your Grocery Dollars and Eat Healthy, Too!
Concern about the cost
of a healthy diet being out
of reach remains on the
minds of many Americans
as the nation continues to
work through serious economic
woes. However, according
to an Agriculture
Department study, the
cost of eating healthy
hasn’t changed as much as
some less-healthy alternatives.
Eating healthy food
while on a budge does require
strategic shopping.
Farm Bureau’s Food
Check-Out Week, February
19-25, 2012, focused on
helping Americans learn
how to stretch their grocery
dollars with healthy,
nutritious food. America’s
farmers and ranchers are
committed to producing
safe, healthy and abundant
food. And they share a
common concern with
consumers when it comes
to putting nutritious meals
on the table while sticking
to a tight budget.
The good news: a recent
USDA report favorably
supports the
economics of healthier
eating. Recent food price
data show that prices for
unprepared, readily available
fresh fruits and vegetables
have remained
stable relative to dessert
and snack foods, such as
chips, ice cream and cola.
Therefore, as defined by
foods in the study, the
price of a “healthier” diet
has not changed compared
to an “unhealthy”
diet.
Farm Bureau’s Food
Check-Out Week is aimed
at helping American consumers
learn how to shop
effectively to put nutritious
meals on the table
with fewer dollars. “Learning
to use your grocery
dollars wisely ensures that
nutrition isn’t neglected,”
according to Sherri Lay,
Women’s Chairperson.
part of a healthy
stretch that dollar,” says
Lay.
Farm Bureau has developed
Food Check-Out
Week educational materials
dedicated to helping
consumers make healthier
food purchases. Information
on several topics including
“Tips for Better
Nutrition on a Tight
Budget,” “How Much
Should I Eat?,” “Understanding
Food Labels” and
“Understanding What My
As part of Food Check-
Out Week the Monroe
County Farm Bureau
Women sponsored a Food
Drive at the Madisonville
Intermediate School February
19-25 2012. Over
1,700 non-perishable food
items were collected. The
class that had the greatest
participation was Dr.
Brenda Rapers 5th grade
class (pictured). All donations
were given to the
Monroe County Douglas
Cherokee Economic Authority
recognizing the
need everyone has to find
solutions to feeding families
healthful foods on a
tight budget.
This was the 14th year,
Food Check-Out Week
also highlights America’s
safe, abundant and affordable
food supply, made
possible largely by America’s
productive farmers
and ranchers. According
to the most recent (2009)
information from the
USDA’s Economic research
families and individuals
spend, on average, less
State and federal agents
on Wednesday arrested
the finance chief of a small
city in northern Illinois,
charging her with stealing
over $30 million from the
city’s coffers and using the
money to create and maintain
a luxurious lifestyle.
Rita Crundwell, 58, comptroller
of Dixon, was accused
of using city funds
to buy a horse farm, tractor-trailer
trucks, a twomillion-dollar
motor
home, jewelry, trips, you
name, in addition to her
$80,000 annual salary.
Think that GSA Las
Vegas blowout that cost
the American taxpayers
$823,000 was something?
Well, according to Fox
news on Thursday, Defense
Secretary Leon
Panetta goes it one better.
Fox said that since becoming
the Pentagon big-wig
in July, Panetta has flown
from DC to his walnut
grove ranch in Monterrey,
California, 27 times at a
cost of $32,000 per trip.
What’s the math?
$864,000.
While we’re on government
money, records from
the National Institutes of
Health released on Thursday
found that the agency
funded a University of
Minnesota website called
“Sexpulse” that features a
graphic image of homosexual
sex and a Space Invaders-style
interactive
game that uses a penisshaped
blaster to shoot
down gay epithets. The
Traditional Values Coalition
said NIT had spent
millions of dollars on the
site at a time “American
people are broke, losing
their homes, and losing
NATIONWIDE
their jobs.”
According to CBS
News on Thursday, one of
the Secret Service agents
who was ousted from his
job over the prostitute
misconduct incident in
Columbia is planning a
lawsuit. Eleven agents and
ten military personnel
were accused of misconduct
in hiring ladies of the
night and engaging in
questionable behavior.
In school news, a nineyear-old
Colorado boy was
suspended from the third
grade on Tuesday after
fighting back against a
bully who was beating
him; police in Virginia arrested
a school teacher
and charged him on 12
felony counts on April
after the 60-year-old educator
lined up his students
during class and fired multiple
blank shots from a
handgun at them; and a
16-year-old special needs
student died from cardiac
arrest when he was put
into restraints at a Yonkers
school on Wednesday.
Rush University Medical
Center researchers
said on Thursday that
even if you’re in your 80’s
you could lower your risk
for Alzheimer’s disease if
you just move around
more. A four-year study
found that the least active
seniors were more than
twice as likely to develop
the affliction compared to
the most active codgers.
A new NBC News-
Wall Street Journal poll released
on Thursday
showed President Obama
still ahead of Republican
challenger Mitt Romney
in national favorability,
though Romney’s score
was the highest yet against
And forecasters with
the National Weather
Service said on Thursday
the drought in the Southwest,
California, and the
Southeast would most
likely worsen through July.
May through July is expected
to be warmer than
normal with a greater risk
of wildfires.
