If a pilot has to make a landing on afie~d closed over by<br />

a low-hanging overcast, he wants to know three things:<br />

When he is lined up -with <strong>the</strong> unseen runway, his distance<br />

from <strong>the</strong> airfield, and <strong>the</strong> rate of descent that will bring<br />

him out a few feet abo:ve<strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> runway. And<br />

<strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> three thing~. <strong>the</strong>AAF's new instrument approach<br />

system tells <strong>the</strong> pilot-by radio.. .<br />
