Blu-ray 

Blu-ray is the next-generation optical disc format that was developed to enable 

recording and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts 

of data. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25GB, which can be used to record over 

2 hours of HDTV. Blu-ray uses a blue-violet laser to read and write data while current 

optical disc technologies such as DVD use a red laser. The shorter wavelengths of the 

Blu-ray technology make it possible to record more data on the same space. These 

discs are safeguarded by Verbatim’s super hard coat which protects against everyday 

wear and tear.

Firmware Updates 

Firmware is the software built into the flash memory of your DVD burner that acts as a control 

centre for the drive’s operation. When blank media is inserted into a drive, the firmware attempts 

to detect the factory media ID on the disc and match this with an internal list of known disc brands 

and write strategies. If the disc is listed, then it uses the write strategy for that disc, resulting in 

optimal burn speed and performance. If the disc brand is not listed, the firmware may be unable to 

produce reliable burning, resulting in ‘power calibration errors’, and disc failure. 

The most important reason for keeping your drive’s firmware up to date is media: as new media 

and faster recording speeds become available, support is implemented in the firmware, which 

determines the optimal parameters for a piece of media, and continually monitors the burn 

process to ensure the quality of the burn. Downloadable firmware updates may appear as often 

as every month or as infrequently as once in a drive’s lifetime. Even new drives sometimes need 

updates applied. New firmware will update the settings on your drive’s internal firmware chip to fix 

bugs, improve performance and add functionality.

DVD Formats: Differences 

DVD media was initially introduced to market under the DVD-R standard, backed by the DVD 

Forum, with notable members including Verbatim, Pioneer, Apple, Samsung and Toshiba among 

others. Some years later a rival format, DVD+R, also emerged. The +R format was originally 

marketed as the most compatible format, although both +R and -R formats display similar 

compatibility with modern day burners and players. DVD+R is backed by the DVD+RW Alliance, 

with members including Verbatim, Philips, Dell, HP and Sony. 

DVD formats aren’t really a problem any more, since most modern DVD burners are multiformat 

and able to read and write to all formats. Set-top DVD recorders and, in some cases, notebooks, 

have not yet caught up to desktop DVD burners. Therefore, if you own a DVD recorder or notebook, 

you could be limited in the formats you can use. These products may be compatible with just one 

set of formats for recordable and rewritable media (eg. either DVD-R/RW; or DVD+R/RW). There are 

quite a few recorders that offer cross-format support, however, and more are appearing.

About RAID 

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. The purpose of using RAID is 

to improve reliability and availability of data, ensuring that important data is not harmed 

in case of hardware failure, and/or to increase the speed of file input/output. The array 

typically distributes data across multiple disks but is seen by the computer user and 

operating system as one single disk. 

There are three key concepts in RAID: mirroring, the writing of identical data to more 

than one disk; striping, the splitting of data across more than one disk; and error 

correction, where redundant (“parity”) data is stored to allow problems to be detected 

and possibly fixed. Different RAID schemes use one or more of these techniques, 

depending on the system requirements. 

Common types of RAID settings include: 

* BIG (Concatenation or Spanning)- This is not actually a RAID protocol at all, rather an 

option in which all the drives in a system are combined into a single virtual disk so they 

act as one big drive. The drives are filled up one at a time. The advantages of using this 

mode is that you can add more drives without having to reformat the system. Available 

storage capacity is the combined capacity of all drives. 

* RAID 0 (Striping)- Data is distributed across multiple disks, enabling accelerated read/ 

write of data by combining the work of two or more drives to increase performance.

* RAID 1 (Mirroring)- Stores a duplicate set of data on separate disks, ensuring the 

protection of users’ data. If one disk fails, all data can be recovered from the other disk.
