yet <strong>the</strong> Cimbri, who left <strong>the</strong> continent three<br />

ag.^s aficrvvards, when <strong>the</strong> arts <strong>of</strong> civil life mud<br />

have been confiderably advanced, bring with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m a rude barbarity <strong>of</strong> manners. <strong>The</strong> Cimbri<br />

are here wafted into <strong>the</strong> ifland in all <strong>the</strong>ir ori-<br />

ginal barbarifm : and yet, before <strong>the</strong> Cimbri<br />

canre over, w^c find tliat '' th.e domeuic improve-<br />

" ments" in Gaul *' had arrived at fom.e degree<br />

*' <strong>of</strong> maturity -." In p. 24 <strong>the</strong> Gauls appear<br />

to have arrived at " forae degree <strong>of</strong> civilization,"-<br />

and in p. 8 agriculture in particular appears to<br />

have beeii " pr<strong>of</strong>ecuted with vigour and iliccefs,"<br />

before <strong>the</strong> Gael left <strong>the</strong> country : and yet <strong>the</strong><br />

Gael are here k;id to have retained <strong>the</strong> rude<br />

fimplicity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir arcellors ; and in p. 47 <strong>the</strong><br />

Gael, and in p. 33 even <strong>the</strong> more fou<strong>the</strong>rly<br />

Cimbri, are borh reprefented as totally ignorant <strong>of</strong><br />

agriculture.—But let us not fcrutinize too nicely.<br />
