<strong>the</strong> Gauls <strong>of</strong> Afia Minor were called Cimme-<br />

rians, or Gomerites, in <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong> J<strong>of</strong>ephus *.<br />

Thus, when all <strong>the</strong> German Celtas were denomi-<br />

nated Cimbri or Cambri, <strong>the</strong>re was a nation <strong>of</strong><br />

Si-Cambri upon <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rhine, and a<br />

tribe <strong>of</strong> Cimbri within <strong>the</strong> peninfula <strong>of</strong> Jut-<br />

land 3. And <strong>the</strong> common appellation <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />

tribes <strong>of</strong> Britain, is ftill retained by <strong>the</strong> defcendants<br />

<strong>of</strong> three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m in Wales. <strong>The</strong> Wellh<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore preferve no mark <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir extraftion<br />

from <strong>the</strong> German Celts, in <strong>the</strong>ir prefent deno-<br />

mination <strong>of</strong> Cymri. It is <strong>the</strong> fign only <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

original derivation from <strong>the</strong> Cimmerii <strong>of</strong> Gaul.<br />

And <strong>Mr</strong>. Macpherfon's whole fcheme, <strong>of</strong> a Cira-<br />

brie or Celto-Germanic eflablifhment in <strong>the</strong><br />

ifland, appears to be entirely hypo<strong>the</strong>tical and<br />

groundlefs.<br />
