<strong>the</strong>m to have been, and that <strong>the</strong>y muft have<br />

been if <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong> fame with his Cimbri*<br />

<strong>The</strong> Belgse never " ravaged all <strong>the</strong> regions<br />

" lying between <strong>the</strong> Rhine and <strong>the</strong> Ionian fea,'*<br />

never " poured irrefiflible armies into Greece,<br />

" Thrace, and Macedonia,*' never cut to pieces<br />

" all <strong>the</strong> intermediate nations between <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

" original feats and <strong>the</strong> Hellefpont," never<br />

*' filled <strong>the</strong> leffer Alia with <strong>the</strong>ir colonies," and<br />

never " extended <strong>the</strong>ir conquefts into Spain.'*<br />

<strong>The</strong>fe magnificent aftions are attributed before<br />

to <strong>the</strong> German Celtae in general, under <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> Cimbri. <strong>The</strong>y are now attributed to<br />

that body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Germans which was particularly<br />

denominated Belgse. And J have previoufly de-<br />

monftrated that <strong>the</strong>y belonged to nei<strong>the</strong>r, buc<br />

were wholly <strong>the</strong> exploits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Native Gauls or<br />

Proper Celta?.<br />

Nor was <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Cimbri given to tho<br />

Belgae, on occafion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir expedition back<br />

into Gaul. That <strong>the</strong>y ever bore <strong>the</strong> appellation,<br />

has not yet been proved by <strong>Mr</strong>. Mac-<br />

pherfon. And it was never <strong>the</strong> mere, ap-<br />

propriated, title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> German Celtse, or <strong>of</strong><br />

any divifion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. It was <strong>the</strong> general and<br />

common denomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole collecTtive<br />

body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Celtce. And fuch it appears very<br />

early on <strong>the</strong> contmenc. <strong>The</strong> natives and reii-.<br />

dents <strong>of</strong> Gaul, that I have previoufly ihewn to<br />
