grefs, and in <strong>the</strong>ir advancement towards matu-<br />

rity to have given an abfolute termination to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. And <strong>the</strong> fame natural caufe, that in its<br />

weaker and commencing operations produced one<br />

produced ano<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> opp<strong>of</strong>ite.—All this,<br />

i think, is clearly afferted toge<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> prefent<br />

traft feems to contain. I'h<strong>of</strong>e improvements,<br />

which in <strong>the</strong>ir infant ftate impelled <strong>the</strong> Gauls to<br />

relsnqulfh <strong>the</strong>ir country, in <strong>the</strong>ir maturer con-<br />

dition not only induced <strong>the</strong>m to (lay at home,<br />

but even brought foreign emigrants into <strong>the</strong><br />

country. " <strong>The</strong> tide <strong>of</strong> migration, which had<br />

*' fur ages flowed from Gaul, returned upon it-<br />

'' felf."<br />

That multiplied population, which was <strong>the</strong> im-<br />

mediate confequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> commencing improve-<br />

mtnts in agriculture, obliged <strong>the</strong> Gauls to dif-<br />

charge
