THE BRITONS ASSERTED, 289<br />

'* quarlans in war '," is now finally determined<br />

in favour and disfavour <strong>of</strong> both. <strong>The</strong> Irifli^ and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir auxiliaries <strong>of</strong> England, Lloyd, Stilling-<br />

fleet, Innes, Carte, and o<strong>the</strong>rs, who aflerted <strong>the</strong><br />

Cantabrian or Scandinavian defcent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scots<br />

and llich <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scotch as, in equal opp<strong>of</strong>ition to<br />

both, ilrenuoufly maintained a Caledonian origin<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir anceftors ; <strong>the</strong>fe were all equally and<br />

partially miftaken.—<strong>The</strong>y who afferted <strong>the</strong> Cantabrian<br />

who denied, <strong>the</strong> Caledonian extraction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Irifli Scots, affirmed and denied what was equally<br />

true and equally falfe. As <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Scot was<br />
