<strong>The</strong>re is a wild fpirit <strong>of</strong> repetition, which co-<br />

lours over <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mr</strong>. Macpherfon's work.<br />

<strong>The</strong> fame arguments prefent <strong>the</strong>mfelves again<br />

and again before us, and frequently in <strong>the</strong> fame<br />

drefs and manner. And this is particularly <strong>the</strong><br />

cafe with <strong>the</strong> prefent feries <strong>of</strong> reafons. All <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m have already received <strong>the</strong>ir anfwers, and have<br />

been difmilfed before. But <strong>the</strong>y are once more<br />

returned, and demand a fecond hearing. And,<br />

as I have given it to <strong>the</strong> three preceding argu-<br />

ments, for <strong>the</strong> fuller elucidation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hiflory, I<br />

cannot refufe it to <strong>the</strong> fourth and lad.<br />

<strong>Mr</strong>. Macpherfon aflerts <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Ar-ga<strong>the</strong>l,<br />

lar-gael, or Ar-gyle, to have been <strong>the</strong> defigna-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scots, as <strong>the</strong> wellern Gael, in contra-<br />

diftinftion to <strong>the</strong> Picts, as <strong>the</strong> eaflern. But <strong>the</strong><br />

Scots were not <strong>the</strong> weftern or <strong>the</strong> Pi6ls <strong>the</strong><br />

eaflern Gael, ei<strong>the</strong>r according to his former ac-<br />

count or <strong>the</strong> truth. According to himfelf in p.<br />

131 and 133, <strong>the</strong> Scots, as inhabitants <strong>of</strong> Icrna,<br />

v/ere feated in Stra<strong>the</strong>rn within <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong><br />

Perth, upon <strong>the</strong> eaftern fide <strong>of</strong> Caledonia and in<br />

<strong>the</strong> very dominions here attributed to <strong>the</strong> Pi6i:s.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> real country <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Britifli Scots, accord-<br />

ing to Bede, commenced immediately from <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn margin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Clyde, and in <strong>the</strong> prefent
