THE BRITONS ASSERTED. 277<br />

<strong>the</strong> appellation to have been common to all <strong>the</strong><br />

tribes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Britons</strong>.<br />

Thus eafily is <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> firft pro<strong>of</strong> re-<br />

pelled. And <strong>the</strong> fecond, which claims to be<br />

*^ conclufive," as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r was " decifive," may<br />

be anfwered as eafily. It is cxa£lly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fame<br />

genius and fpirlt. And, if we allow <strong>Mr</strong>. ]\Iac-<br />

pherfon all his premifes again, his conclufion will<br />

be again unjufl:. If we permit him to interpret<br />

.Caeldoch into <strong>the</strong> country <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gael, and if<br />

we acknowledge it to be <strong>the</strong> fame v/ord with <strong>the</strong><br />

Roman Caledonia, yet no inference will arifc<br />

from ci<strong>the</strong>r or both againft <strong>the</strong> Irifli extra^ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scots. <strong>The</strong> only inference is, that <strong>the</strong><br />

prefent and antient Caledonians were denominated<br />

iGael. But it does not prove <strong>the</strong> Scots to have<br />

been native Caledonians, becaufe <strong>the</strong>y refided in<br />

<strong>the</strong> country <strong>of</strong> Caledonia. <strong>The</strong> word Caeldoch<br />

being <strong>the</strong> ilime with Caledonia, that name can<br />

evince <strong>the</strong> Caledonian extradion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scots no<br />

more than this. And <strong>the</strong> whole compafs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Highlands might be called Caeldoch and Caledo-<br />

nia 5 and yet <strong>the</strong> Scots, fettled in a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

country, might be a colony <strong>of</strong> people derived from<br />

Ireland.<br />

So totally weak and unmeaning is this laffc<br />

and cl<strong>of</strong>mg argument againil <strong>the</strong> Irifli extraclion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scots. And <strong>the</strong> fcvcral parts <strong>of</strong> it,<br />
