more <strong>the</strong>ir particular and peculiar defcent from<br />

<strong>the</strong>m; than <strong>the</strong> retention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>Britons</strong><br />

by <strong>the</strong> Strathclydenfes, in <strong>the</strong> eighth and ninth<br />

ages, would prove <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> appropriated re-<br />

mains <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Britanni, to <strong>the</strong> exclufion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Gallowefe, <strong>the</strong> WeKh, and <strong>the</strong> Cornifli ; or than<br />

<strong>the</strong> adherence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Brigantes to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Britons</strong> <strong>of</strong> Yorkfhire and Durham, in a much<br />

earlier period, evinced <strong>the</strong>m alone to be <strong>the</strong> pro-<br />

geny <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> true Brigantes. <strong>The</strong> Celise <strong>of</strong> one<br />

third <strong>of</strong> Gaul were peculiarly denominated Galli,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Galli <strong>of</strong> one third <strong>of</strong> Celtica were dif-<br />

tinftively denominated Celt^ ' ; and yet nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> Galli nor Celtae were peculiarly and diflinc-<br />

tively <strong>the</strong> defcendants <strong>of</strong> th<strong>of</strong>e Galli or th<strong>of</strong>e<br />

Celtic, who originally p<strong>of</strong>feiTed <strong>the</strong>mfclvcs <strong>of</strong><br />

France. <strong>The</strong> general appellation <strong>of</strong> a nation,<br />

as I have remarked above, was frequently re<br />

tained for <strong>the</strong> defignation <strong>of</strong> fome particular<br />

tribes in it.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> Alban and Albanlch„ for<br />

<strong>the</strong> country and inhabitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Highlands,<br />

have no relation at all to <strong>the</strong> firfl colonics <strong>of</strong><br />

Britain. <strong>The</strong>fe I have already Hiewn to have<br />

been denominated <strong>Britons</strong>, Brigantes, or fc-<br />

parated men. And <strong>the</strong> fame name which ig<br />
