certainly to <strong>the</strong> Eaft and North <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great<br />

bodies both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caledonian and Pioman<br />

<strong>Britons</strong>. Andj even if both had been placed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Weil, would this be a competent reafon<br />

for appropriating <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Yverdhon<br />

to <strong>the</strong>m ? Mud not all <strong>the</strong> <strong>Britons</strong>, from<br />

<strong>the</strong> mouth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cliiyd to <strong>the</strong> French<br />

channel, have been equally with ei<strong>the</strong>r entitled<br />

to <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Yverdhon ? For were <strong>the</strong>y not<br />

all, at lead equally, fituated " to <strong>the</strong> Weft <strong>of</strong><br />

*' (uch neighbours as had an immediate commu-<br />

*' nication with <strong>the</strong> Romans?" And does not<br />

<strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Hibernia appear long before <strong>the</strong><br />

Romans had any fettlement in <strong>the</strong> ifland ? <strong>Mr</strong>.<br />

Macpherfon in p. 56 acknowledges that it does,<br />

affirming Csefar to be <strong>the</strong> firfl: that mentions <strong>the</strong><br />

name.—-<strong>The</strong> Caledonian and Irifh Scots are faid<br />

to have had a title to <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Hiberni,<br />

** from an exaft conformity <strong>of</strong> genius^ language,<br />

*' manners, and d?'efs" as Well as fituation and<br />

climate. But muft not alm<strong>of</strong>t all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Bri-<br />

tons, all that were in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn and<br />

mediterranean regions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ifland, have been<br />

equally entitled to <strong>the</strong> fame appellation; as tbey<br />

w^re equally conformable iji all ?<br />
