extended his empire over a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pi6ls,<br />

and fubje6i:ed his new dominions to <strong>the</strong> one bi-<br />

fliop <strong>of</strong> Northumbria ^. <strong>The</strong>fe were afterwards,<br />

in 681, formed into a feparate diocefs by king<br />

Egfrid ^, and continued fo to <strong>the</strong> year 685 7. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> year 701 Adamnan, <strong>the</strong> Abbot <strong>of</strong> Hii, was<br />

fcnt on an embalfy by <strong>the</strong> Scots to Alfrid king<br />

<strong>of</strong> Northumbria, refided fome time in <strong>the</strong> coun-<br />

try, and was converted by <strong>the</strong> Northumbrian<br />

fcholars to <strong>the</strong> Saxon mode <strong>of</strong> obferving Eafter ^.<br />

In 7 10 <strong>the</strong> monarch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pi£ls fent embaffadors<br />

to Ceolfrid, <strong>the</strong> Abbot <strong>of</strong> Bede's own monaflery,<br />

who had converfed with Adamnan before 9, and<br />

with whom Bede was <strong>the</strong>n, and had been for<br />
