This formidable argument is furely a mere<br />

accumulation <strong>of</strong> impertinences.— <strong>The</strong> Saxons,,<br />

even more than a century before <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong><br />

Honorius, were not only " in fome meafure a<br />

** maritime people," but were remarkably ex-<br />

pert in <strong>the</strong> arts <strong>of</strong> navigation. Such <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

well known to have been in <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong> Carau-<br />

fms. And fuch <strong>the</strong>y continued as late as <strong>the</strong><br />

days <strong>of</strong> Sidonius<br />

Saxona,—cui pelle falum fulcare Britannum<br />

Ludus.<br />

—But <strong>the</strong> verbal criticifm here is more obfer-<br />

vable. <strong>Mr</strong>. Macpherfon has repeatedly fup-<br />

p<strong>of</strong>ed before, that Claudian, even in a retro-<br />
