<strong>The</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> arguments by which <strong>the</strong> au-<br />

thority <strong>of</strong> Bede, concerning <strong>the</strong> primary deriva-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scots into Britain, is fupp<strong>of</strong>ed to be<br />

overthrown. And each <strong>of</strong>^heni, it is obvious, is<br />

without <strong>the</strong> fmallefl: force. <strong>The</strong> reafons urged<br />

againfl an eflablifbment by violence are con-<br />

vincing in <strong>the</strong>mfelves, but carry no conclufivenefs<br />

in <strong>the</strong>m with regard to <strong>the</strong> main point. And<br />

<strong>the</strong> reafons advanced againft an eflablifhment<br />

by confent are all vague and frivolous. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

are various kinds <strong>of</strong> amicable fettlements ; and<br />

<strong>the</strong> author (hould have endeavoured to fet <strong>the</strong>m<br />

all afide. But he has mentioned only one or two.<br />

And he has particularly omitted that which I<br />

have mentioned in <strong>the</strong> Hiftory <strong>of</strong> Manchefler,<br />

and which was in all probability <strong>the</strong> very kind<br />

<strong>of</strong> amicable eflablifhment that took place upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> prefent occafion \<br />
