THE GENUINE HISTORY OF<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cimbri and Gael_, is <strong>the</strong>refore entirely<br />

overturned, as his great partition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

South to <strong>the</strong> Cimbri and Belgce was be-<br />

fore. Th<strong>of</strong>e whom he denominates Cimbri and<br />

opp<strong>of</strong>es to <strong>the</strong> Gael, <strong>the</strong> Cimbric Ottadini <strong>of</strong><br />

p. 51, lived only in a fmall part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country<br />

which he has affigned to <strong>the</strong> Cimbri, and<br />

poiTefled alfo a large portion <strong>of</strong> that region<br />

which he has allotted to <strong>the</strong> Gael. But this is<br />

not all. <strong>The</strong> whole " country between <strong>the</strong><br />

*' Walls" <strong>Mr</strong>. Macpherfon here refigns up to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gael, as <strong>the</strong> Selgova?, Gadeni, and O<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

whom he engages in h<strong>of</strong>lility with, and <strong>the</strong>re-<br />

fore fupp<strong>of</strong>es to be <strong>of</strong> a different origin from,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ottadini immediately to <strong>the</strong> South <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nearer Wall. But <strong>the</strong> whole body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Otta-<br />

dinian dominions, except a very fmall flip <strong>of</strong> land<br />

along <strong>the</strong> fou<strong>the</strong>rn edge <strong>of</strong> Northumberland,<br />

was aOually to <strong>the</strong> North <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearer Wall ^.<br />

<strong>Mr</strong>. Macpherfon cedes all *' <strong>the</strong> country betwixt<br />

** <strong>the</strong> Walls'* to his Gael, and <strong>the</strong>refore brings<br />

<strong>the</strong>m down to <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Solway<br />

and Tweed. But he is not aware, that <strong>the</strong><br />

nearer Wall did not run from <strong>the</strong> Solway to <strong>the</strong><br />

Tweed. It began on <strong>the</strong> Solway : but it ended<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Tyne.<br />

Thus have I laid open <strong>the</strong> numerous miflakes<br />

in this remarkable palfage. I have fhewn <strong>the</strong><br />

* Hiftory <strong>of</strong> Mancheller, p. 63.<br />

reafonlngs.
