Invernefs '. <strong>The</strong> Romans <strong>the</strong>refore, who had<br />

penetrated into <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Highlands, who<br />

fettled in all <strong>the</strong> conquered regions from <strong>the</strong><br />

Friths to Invernefs, and even made an aftro-<br />

nomical obfervation, which is ftill preferved, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Invernefs =, could not be ignorant <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> countries in which <strong>the</strong>y refided, could not be<br />

uninformed concerning <strong>the</strong> region which imme-<br />

diately bordered upon <strong>the</strong>m, and mud have been<br />

fufficiently converfant with all Caledonia. Inti-<br />

mately acquainted, as <strong>the</strong>y were, with <strong>the</strong> inte-<br />

riors <strong>of</strong> an iiland which <strong>the</strong>y had never vifited at<br />

all, Ireland •, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

muft have been much better<br />

acquainted with <strong>the</strong> interiors <strong>of</strong> Caledonia, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y were encamped for thirty<br />

years toge<strong>the</strong>r, and where <strong>the</strong>ir fcholars appear<br />

to have been particularly obfervant.<br />

<strong>Mr</strong>. Macpherfon's remark <strong>the</strong>refore, that his<br />

Caledonians were little known to <strong>the</strong> Romans,<br />

becaufe <strong>the</strong>y appeared only tranfiently upon <strong>the</strong><br />

frontiers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir empire, or becaufe <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

never abfolutely reduced by <strong>the</strong>ir armies, appears<br />

to be equally unjuft in <strong>the</strong> reafoning and falfe in<br />
